Speech during Broadcom Global Distribution Warehouse Opening Ceremony (e/c)

Good morning. I am pleased to be present today at the opening ceremony of Broadcom Global Distribution Warehouse at Batu Kawan Industrial Park. This Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) by this top American developer and global supplier of products based on analog and digital semiconductor technologies, marks the continued growth of investments into Penang.

Penang – E&E Sector Growth and Hub of Global Distribution

The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) has projected that the global semiconductor sales will increase by 11.5% to reach USD377.8 billion this year, and the Asia Pacific region will experience the highest growth of 12.4%. Out of the RM59 billion approved investment recorded from 2008-2016, RM14 billion or 24% were from US investors, which makes US the largest FDI contributor to the Penang economy. American Investment Continues To Flow Unabated Into Penang

The recent public announcement on the New York Stock Exchanged-listed Boston Scientific Corp commencing operations at its first Asian factory in Penang in Batu Kawan Industrial Park is a strong vote of confidence in Penang as a location of choice for investment. This is the 19th global manufacturing facility for the medical device giant, and its first in Asia.

According to its vice-president and general manager of manufacturing and distribution for Malaysia Dave Mitchell, the company has injected “hundreds of million of ringgit” into the new plant, with plans to add as many as 400 new local jobs over two years. He added “the company ultimately selected the Penang site for its high-skilled workforce, infrastructure to support manufacturing and business friendliness”. Halimah Yacob Has Succeeded For Singapore Where Even The United States Failed In Electing The First Woman President(e/c)

DAP congratulates Halimah Yacob in being elected to Singapore’s highest office, as its first ever woman President. She has succeeded for Singapore where even the United States failed in electing a woman President.

Apart from breaking the glass ceiling for women, she is also a Malay and Muslim, a minority in Singapore. She also wears a tudung(hijab) without any restriction. This augurs well both for inclusion and diversity, granting equal opportunity for all regardless of race, religion, gender or background.

Tech Dome Penang will have a special Inventions Exhibition brought all the way from the National Science and Technology Museum, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. This is their first international exhibition that is organized in Tech Dome and we are very proud that the prestigious National Science and Technology Museum has chosen Tech Dome.
