30th Anniversary of Ops Lalang: The Struggle Against Repressive Legislation Continues
Today is the 30th anniversary of one of the darkest episodes of modern Malaysian history, the Operasi Lalang arrest and detention of 106 people including NGO activists, politicians and academics under the draconian Internal Security Act 1960 (ISA) on 27 October 1987. At the same time, media freedom was curtailed when the newspaper licenses of The Star, Sin Chew Jit Poh and Watan were revoked.
As the first to be detained and the last released under Operasi Lalang, I have constantly reminded myself that we must never give up the struggle to free Malaysia from political persecution and repressive legislation. Although it has been 30 years since Operasi Lalang, which was the second largest ISA crackdown since the 13 May riots in 1969, our nation continues to be tormented by similar draconian laws that suppress our fundamental liberties. We therefore cannot afford to give up, because if we do then tyranny and oppression will win. Media Statement by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in Penang on Friday 20th October 2017
27th October 1987 will always remain a dark day in Malaysian history when the BN Government launched a massive crackdown, detaining Malaysian men and women from all backgrounds and all walks of life under the draconian Internal Security Act, Codenamed Operasi Lalang or weeding operation; the mass arrests were intended to weed out voices of dissent against the establishment, without any access to legal representation or brought to court to defend themselves against baseless charges of endangering national security. Continue reading “马华大事做不了、小事做不好，就是华教被剥削和剥夺的主因。”

Malaysian Indians will only be confident that the BN’s so-called Malaysian Indian Blueprint(MIB) is not a general election gimmick if blue ICs can be issued to stateless Indians, one Tamil secondary school can be approved, Indian university students can be given good courses and A Hindu Endowment Board can be set up in every state to look after Hindu temples. There is a stronger basis for Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission(MACC) to arrest and investigate Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya when he “intervened” in his own Ministry, as compared to Penang State EXCO member Phee Boon Poh who was arrested despite making a request to a department not under Phee’s EXCO portfolio. For this reason, MACC must immediately arrest and investigate Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya for improperly “supporting” a fake dentist, Nur Farahanis Ezatty Adli, who was fined RM70,000 for practicing dentistry without a license, by appealing on her behalf. Dear fellow Malaysian and German friends, I’m happy to see all of you again to celebrate the annual Oktoberfest. Stringent police security should ensure that terrorist threats from the Islamic state ISIL terror group, should neither disrupt our daily lives nor prevent the coming royal visit by Prince Charles and his wife to Malaysia next month. Inspector General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said that police have not received any terror threat to Britain’s Prince Charles’ but security will be tight for the high-profile royal event.
Fuzi was commenting on a challenge issued by an Islamic State fighter from Singapore to Prince Charles’ son, Prince Harry, a former army attack helicopter pilot, to come and fight the terror group in Syria and Iraq. Despite this, DAP has confidence that the Malaysian police when fully committed, has both the professional capacity and capability, to ensure that the Prince Charles royal visit here remains safe and trouble-free. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) must arrest and investigate Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya for improperly “supporting” a fake dentist, Nur Farahanis Ezatty Adli, who was fined RM70,000 for practicing dentistry without a license, by appealing on her behalf. MACC should arrest Hilmi to determine whether Hilmi had abused his powers in trying to “help” a bogus dentist who was practicing illegally.
Hilmi had a day earlier denied that he or anyone from his ministry gave their support to an individual who was found guilty of practising dentistry without a licence. Hilmy denial was quickly exposed as a lie.
