2014 Penang State Government Christmas Message By Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng In Komtar, George Town On 24.12.2014.
This Christmas is a most challenging one as it forces Malaysians to choose between two groups, one comprising politicians and opportunists against another group comprising political leaders and statesmen. The former take the easy way out by spewing out hatred and lies to preach extremism and racism whilst the latter takes the difficult approach of adopting the straight line by advocating moderation, justice, freedom and democracy.
Non-Muslims and moderate Muslims have courageously stood together for moderation against forces of extremism. For the fight for moderation over extremism to succeed, we need to show that justice only has meaning when there is also justice for the poor, voiceless, ill and the weak.

Press Statement By Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng In Komtar, George Town On 20.12.2014.
Extremist UMNO supporters and Perkasa leaders’ unruly and uncivilised behaviour during demonstrations against the Penang state government in Komtar and the Perak DAP state headquarters in Ipoh, are masquerading as defenders of Islam by not daring to demonstrate against MCA, which demanded the repeal of the Administration of the Religion of Islam(State of Penang) Enactment 2004. Such proposed repeal by MCA would effectively mean also the abolition of the Majlis Agama Islam Negeri Pulau Pinang, a gross insult and interference in Islamic affairs.
Even extremist UMNO supporters and Perkasa leaders have the right to demonstrate, but must be done peacefully, even if they oppose the legally valid and factually correct position of the Penang state government, that fatwas are only applicable on Muslims and not on non-Muslims. Their unruly and uncivilised behaviour yesterday physically harrassed the Continue reading “Extremist UMNO Supporters And Perkasa Leaders’ Unruly And Uncivilised Behaviour During Demonstrations Against The Penang State Government In Komtar And The Perak DAP State Headquarters In Ipoh, Are Masquerading As Defenders Of Islam By Not Daring To Demonstrate Against MCA, Which Demanded The Repeal Of The Administration of the Religion of Islam(State of Penang) Enactment 2004.(e/c)”

PAS’ arguments for wanting to implement hudud laws on Muslims in Kelantan despite being not part of the PR Common Policy or 2013 General Election Manifesto is centered on 3 key points. One, that this is PAS democratic right and PR component parties can agree to disagree. Two, the hudud laws were proposed in Kelantan before PR was established and hence not relevant to PR. Finally it is only implemented on Muslims and does not affect non-Muslims.
Such arguments are both self-contradictory and fallacious. Whilst PAS can pursue its hudud agenda within the democratic context, it must do so within the framework of PR as a coalition partner that trusts its partners and keep its promises. Worse, this violates the PR consensus painstakingly achieved since 2008 as set out in the Common Policy and 2013 General Election Manifesto that did not mention hudud laws at all. Further such actions can even be considered dishonourable as a result of PAS’ willingness to work with its mortal enemy UMNO and against the wishes of both PKR and DAP.

Press Statement By Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng In Komtar, George Town On 18.12.2014.
The Penang State Government would equally defend the Administration of the Religion of Islam(State of Penang) Enactment 2004 against repeal by MCA as well as uphold the fundamental principle that fatwas are not applicable on non-Muslims.
UMNO extremists and racists would fundamentally alter the basic character and identity of our Federal Constitution and deprive the inalienable constitutional rights of non-Muslims by insisting that religious fatwas are applicable on non-Muslims as on Muslims. The Penang state government stands firm and uphold the present laws that fatwas are not applicable on non-Muslims and only on Muslims.

Would UMNO, Including Ministers Like Khairy Jamaludin, Dare To Lodge Police Reports And Condemn Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem For Opposing Hudud And That Religious Fatwas Are Not Applicable On Non-Muslims?
I am not surprised that an Oxford University graduate like Youth Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar continues to adopt the extremist and fundamentalist position to condemn me for my statement that syariah laws and fatwas are applicable on Muslims but non on non-Muslims. Non-Muslims can be charged for religious offences such as preaching to Muslims, but only under civil laws such as Penal Code, but not under syariah laws because to do so would be a dangerous and unacceptable imposition of Islamic laws on non-Muslims.

The police report lodged by Batu Kawan Umno vice-chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan against 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) for mismanagement of funds has exposed the intense internal power struggle and crisis within UMNO. UMNO cannot distract attention from the UMNO internal crisis over 1MDB by bullying me with lies that I am trying to interfere in Islamic affairs for my statement that an Islamic religious edict or fatwa is not applicable on non-Muslims because Islamic laws cannot be imposed on non-Muslims.
This position that a fatwa does not apply to non-Muslims is not only human and morally right but also sanctioned by the Federal Constitution and even embodied by the Administration of the Religion of Islam(State of Penang) Enactment 2004. Section 49(1) of the Enactment states that a fatwa shall be binding on every Muslim in the state…, without mentioning non-Muslims, clearly restricting its application on Muslims.

DAP strongly disagrees with former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad over Christoph R Mueller’s appointment as chief executive officer-designate of Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAS NewCo) shows that Malaysians are stupid in not knowing how to manage aviation incurring billions of ringgit of losses since its inception.
In fact, it is BN and not Malaysians who is stupid, by relying on racism to cloak incompetent cronies instead of spotting talented Malaysians right before their very eyes such as the Air Asia team of Tony Fernandes, Datuk Kamarudin Meranon and Azran Osman Rani. The success of Air Asia is well-known internationally. Without a single cent in government support and subsidies, they have transformed the airline industry by offering affordable fares where “everyone can fly”.
