Dato’ Seri Najib Razak must be held responsible and accountable for the 1MDB scandal (e/c)

I have written in statement dated 22 May 2018 that the Ministry of Finance (MoF) has since April 2017 made payments on behalf of 1MDB amounting to RM6.98 billion. The figure has yet to include another RM954 million to be paid before the end of this year. These payments are tantamount to a major bailout of 1MDB.

Former Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Najib Razak wrote on his Facebook on Friday evening that it is “wrong to call it a bail out of 1MDB”.

Explaining the facts behind Malaysia’s RM1 trillion of liabilities (e/c)

The former Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Najib Razak has issued a statement criticizing the present Government’s announcement that our debt is now RM1 trillion. He said it “will just unsettle the financial markets, alarm the credit rating agencies and investors confidence in our institutions such as our Bank Negara Malaysia”.

We would like the explain that the new Government will carry out our administration based on the principles of competency, accountability and transparency (CAT). We want to establish the true baseline on the state of financial affairs, diagnose the problems and then prescribe all necessary remedies. My first day has started with a serie of meetings with all senior Treasury officials(e/c)

My first day has started with a serie of meetings with all senior Treasury officials led by Deputy Treasurer-General, Datuk Siti Zauyah Mohd Desa and separately with the Auditor-General, Tan Sri Madinah binti Mohamad and her team.

Both of them briefed me on the current status on the nation’s finances and the shocking revelation that they were not able to access certain accounts and reports. There were also complaints that certain “red” files that were only accessible to certain parties which impeded officials and auditors from carry out their professional responsibilities with integrity. Payment of Interest for 1MDB (e/c)

I have been informed by the Deputy Treasurer-General, Datuk Siti Zauyah binti Mohd Desa that among the most urgent items to be resolved in my first days of office is the payment of interest for 1MDB borrowings. This is because the amount of RM143.75 million is due to be paid by 1MDB on 30 May 2018.

I have also been informed that Arul Kanda remains as the President and CEO of 1MDB until 30 June 2018. Arul Kanda has to date insisted that 1MDB is fully able to service its debt obligations. Therefore, I have given instructions for Arul Kanda to brief and clarify if 1MDB is able to pay the above sum due next week. Continue reading “Payment of Interest for 1MDB (e/c)”

Loving Penang and Malaysia (e/m/c)

I have been asked when I will be bidding farewell to Penang when I assume my new post as Malaysian Finance Minister in Putrajaya. I will not be doing so, simply because I will not be leaving Penang. How can you leave Penang when Penang will always be my home and my family’s sanctuary?

I have said that you can take me out of Penang but you cannot take Penang out of me. The obvious reason is that we are all proud to be Penangites, Saya anak negeri Penang, “Wah si Penang lang”. We are proud at what Penang has been able to achieve since Penangites took the courageous step to vote for change and replace the BN state government with Pakatan in the heady days of the first political tsunami of 8 March 2008. Press Statement by DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng in conjunction of the World Press Freedom Day in Kuala Lumpur on 3 May, 2018

This is not fake news: Pakatan Harapan Government will free the media and repeal all laws and policies that stifle the media.

Even before Parliament was dissolved on 7th March to make way for Malaysia’s 14th general election to be held on 9th May, the tightly-controlled mainstream media have been openly campaigning for Barisan Nasional, with their distortion and lies.
