The Penang state government will provide lawyers and legal funding to defend any PPS member who are wrongly arrested by police, not for any criminal wrongdoing, but merely for being a good Samaritan and helping the public. This follows the bullying threats by Inspector-General of Police(IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar who said that police will arrest members of the (PPS) if they continued their activities.
In a Bernama report yesterday, Khalid had given a new reason for wanting to stop PPS members from continuing with their activities of helping the public, by arresting them. Khalid claimed “PPS appeared to have strayed from its objective when it was established four years ago to serve the community but have now started hitting people, some journalists had been beaten, people who disagreed with them were also beaten… at least two police reports have been lodged by the public and the journalists concerned”.

On behalf of the State Government and the people of Penang, let me first of all extend a very warm welcome to all of you, especially those who have come from abroad.
I am really happy to note that we have more than 20 firms interested to be involved in the implementaion of the Transport Master Plan from now till 2030 through the PDP concept.
This is a comprehensive master plan that includes and integrates land, sea and rail modes of transport, and it has been adopted by the State Government in March 2013.

The failed medical romance with world-renowned Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is a costly US$ 34.199 million (RM107.91 million) for only 80 students and the Federal government must come clean on how Malaysia benefits from spending RM1.35 million per student. The public will also be interested whether the 80 students are all Malaysians and the critieria applied for their selection.
This full accountability is especially important when the Federal government has made limited offers to only 418 brilliant students to take up medicine at local public universites. Deputy Minister of Education P Kamalanathan said yesterday that the limited number of offers is due to a over-supply of new doctors where only 418 out of 1,163 students who obtained top marks were selected for medicine.

Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Kuala Lumpur On 18 August 2014.
The end of the 4 year medical romance with the world-renowned Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from the United States, reinforces the culture of mediocrity in Malaysian educational standards and the sad reality that there is no room for excellent institutions or brilliant students. Further this is symptomatic of the failure of the BN Federal government’s transformation programme to pursue excellence and the creative city concept due in part to reluctance to embrace the critical success factors of talent, technology and tolerance.
The 3TS of talent, technology and tolerance must co-exist in an eco-system that can engender creativity. Whilst we may have the talent and the readiness to invest in technology, the general reluctance to permit tolerance of different ideas and lifestyles has proven to be to big a hindrance for Malaysia until our universities have descended into mediocrity and our talented resources have migrated in droves to other countries.

August 17th’s PAS central leadership meeting has often been cited as the decisive date for the fate and future of Pakatan Rakyat that comprises PAS, DAP and PKR. If PAS refuses to endorse a change of the Selangor Menteri Besar, by replacing Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim with PKR’s choice of PKR President Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, this will immediately lead to a break-up and end of PR both in Selangor and nationally.
However PAS can no longer wait until 17 August following the statement by Deputy UMNO President Tan Sri Muhyidin Yassin, that UMNO’s 12 Assemblymen will give full and unconditional support to Khalid to continue as Menteri Besar. Instead PAS has to immediately state whether they support UMNO’s position in giving unconditional support to Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim to continue as Selangor Menteri Besar.

The Penang PR state government is willing to assume full responsibility if permitted to take over the National Park Advisory Council, the statutory authority that controls and manages the Penang National Park. It is self-contradictory and ridiculous for Penang Barisan Nasional chairman Teng Chang Yeow to blame the state government for trying to wash our hands off the nudist camp issue at Teluk Kampi inside the Penang National Park, when we have no final decision-making powers relating to the National Park.
I am surprised that Teng is so ignorant of the basics of governance as a former Penang EXCO member, when he claimed that the state has powers of authority over the Penang National Park solely on the basis of the State Secretary and 3 other representatives nominated by the state to the National Park Advisory Council under Section 5 of the 1980 National Parks Act. Teng is wrong because the Chairman of the National Park Advisory Council is the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and a majority of the members of the Council are appointed by the Federal government.

Any restructuring or rationalization plan to rescue Malaysia Airline System(MAS) must necessarily ensure that the rights and benefits of the 20,000 MAS employees be retained as well as the unfair contracts benefiting BN cronies be terminated. DAP is willing to have an open mind on MAS’ statement that its 69.37% owner Khazanah Nasional, will offer 27 cents for each share that Khazanah does not own.
Khazanah will have to pay nearly RM 1.4 billion in cash payments to buy up the remaining 30.67% shares Khazanah does not own for MAS to go private. However these 2 preconditions stated above must be met.
DAP is not surprised that the move to delist MAS from Bursa Malaysia is due to the airline’s unfavourable financial performance with accumulated losses of RM8.53 billion as at March 31, 2013. MAS reported a RM 279 million net loss for the first three months of 2014, and is expected to record the biggest quarterly net loss in its history for the 2nd quarter of 2014, due to the tragic loss of MH370 and MH17.

BN is gambling with Malaysians’ health and safety by entering into a compact with disaster that puts profits over people by stubbornly persisting with its plans to build 2 nuclear power reactors. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong had urged critics of nuclear energy to keep an open mind as Malaysia cannot continue on an energy status quo. According to Mah, “Natural gas now provides 40% of our electricity supply whilst coal provides nearly 50%. By 2020, only 27% will be from natural gas and 60% coal. For that reason nuclear energy is a serious option for sustainability of energy resources.”
Mah is wrong because Malaysia will be able to shift to a sustainable energy paradigm without relying on nuclear power plants if the government wipes out corruption, invests on renewable energy projects, diversifies their domestic economies, reduces their reliance on hydrocarbon resources. Lest Mah forgets about the risks of nuclear energy, more than 150,000 evacuees are still unable to return home after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011 following the huge earthquake and tsunami. Japan is still dealing with contaminated groundwater around the Fukushima nuclear power plants everyday.

The 3 MCA and Gerakan Ministers must draw the red line that the Cabinet disavow Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Razali Ibrahim’s divisive, extremist and unconstitutional attacks against Mandarin mother tongue education by building a new Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina(SJKC) in Bukit Indah, Johor or else they will resign the Ministerial posts.
In response to requests for a new SJKC in Bukit Indah, Datuk Razali had called on the BN Federal government not to build any more new Chinese schools because the existence of SJKC does not strengthen national schools and served only to divide the people and rupture relations between the various races. DAP cannot understand this backward thinking and perverse logic when MCA Ministers are appointed even though they attend SJKCs. Is Razali saying that the 2 MCA Ministers are divisive and anti-national?

I am shocked by the unprovoked attack launched by PAS MP for Temerloh Nasrudin bin Hassan at Tantawi against me by relying on baseless claims and lies on my stewardship of the Penang state government’s finances and award of South-East Asia’s first under-seabed tunnel project from Gurney Drive in Penang island to Bagan Ajam in Seberang Perai. Nasrudin has 24 hours to unreservedly and unconditionally withdraw his lies and apologise to me.
Nasrudin had questioned why I was not criticized within Pakatan Rakyat like Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim was getting over the Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex) project when I had also used direct negotiations to award the RM4.63 billion under seabed tunnel project to Construction Zenith BUCG Bhd. Nasruddin also claimed that Penangites opposed this project because of my conduct of Penang government’s finances had resulted in 6 years of budget deficits.

The first litmus test for all political parties from both BN and PR is whether they sincerely oppose gender discrimination by endorsing and accepting that a woman is qualified to be a Menteri Besar/Chief Minister of a state, before deciding on whether PKR President Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is suitable for the post as Selangor Menteri Besar.
I wish to restate that all political parties whether PR or BN should state clearly and unequivocally that they support and accept any woman as qualified to hold the post of Menteri Besar or Chief Minister of any state. This follows statements made by political leaders and alluded to by Parliamentary Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that Wan Azizah is not qualified to be Menteri Besar solely because of her gender.
