The Penang state government wishes to thank the 25,000 Malaysians and Penangites who turned up to pay their last respects during the public funeral of DAP National Chairman and MP for Bukit Glugor Karpal Singh organized by the state government at Dewan Sri Pinang yesterday. The mammoth crowd was unexpected. We wish to apologise to all who came from far and near but did not have the opportunity to pay their last respects to Karpal Singh at Dewan Sri Pinang.

We hope that the public can forgive and overlook any shortcomings during the public funeral. The police did not turn up as planned to conduct crowd control outside Dewan Sri Pinang. The state government would conduct a post-mortem to determine the reasons behind the police not turning up as planned and work towards overcoming the weaknesses that may have caused any inconvenience to the public.

Emerging Penang In An Emerging Asia: Escaping The Middle-income Trap

A very Good Evening,

It is indeed a pleasure speaking to you in this special occasion tonight on Business and Investment Updates in Penang.

Penang is one of the top three tourist destinations and investor location of choice in Malaysia. For the first two months of this year Penang airport domestic arrivals recorded a 33.4% increase compared to the same period last year whilst foreign airport arrivals recorded a 8.23%. Penang was the top foreign direct investment (FDI) state in Malaysia for the period of 2010 to August 2013 amounting to RM 19.7 billion or nearly 20% of Malaysia’s total FDI of RM 103 billion.

Apart from being the investment location of choice of almost all of the top electronics, L.E.D., medical devices and aerospace companies in the world, Penang has been recognised as a cost-competitive location by the International Institute for Management Development 2012 World Competitiveness Yearbook. There is no doubt that Penang is slowly emerging in an emerging Asia.

Penang Can Only Win The Future By Investing In Public Infrastructure, Building Human Talent, Sustainable Policies, Reducing Inequality, Good And Clean Governance.(en/cn)

6th Political Tsunami Anniversary Message by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in Komtar, George Town on 7.3.2014.

As we celebrate the political tsunami of 8 March 2008 that ushered in a new era of democratic politics by establishing a two-coalition system in Malaysia, where a change of government is not an imagined possibility but a likely probability, we must not forget that the PR state government’s policies must give priority both to the rakyat and also towards winning the future.

Penang can only win the future for our children by investing in public infrastructure, building human talent, sustainable policies, reducing inequality, good and clean governance. For that reason, Government must also invest and innovate. The government must invest in infrastructure, people, incentives and subsidies.

The RM3.3 Billion IT-BPO Hub Aspires To Be A Change-maker In Allowing Penang To Escape The Middle-Income Trap And Become A High-Income Economy.(en/cn)

Speech by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng At The Launching Of Penang IT-BPO Hub Next To The Penang International Airport On 1st March 2014

It is a great pleasure for me to be here with you today at the launch of Penang’s RM3.3 Billion Information Technology Outsourcing(IT) and Business Process Outsourcing(BPO) Hub and probably the first IT-BPO Hub in Malaysia. The RM3.3 billion IT-BPO Hub aims to be a change-maker in allowing Penang to escape the middle-income trap and become a high-income economy.

Wining The Future By Investing In The Future Through The IT-BPO Hub
Malaysia and Penang’s economy has shifted from extraction in the 1960s to industrialisation, from the export of raw commodities to manufacturing. In other words, Penang’s economy was factor-driven by relying on basic commodities before being efficiency-driven by relying on manufacturing. Penang needs to be not only efficiency-driven but also innovation-driven in manufacturing, services and even the public sector.

The key to future economic success is not an over-reliance on one sector but to seek convergence of not only the manufacturing sector but also both the services and government sector. Services sector includes not only tourism, medical treatment and education but shared services, IT and BPO such as finance, accounting and data processing.

Malaysian Airlines’(MAS) Huge Financial Losses Over The Last 3 Years Amounting To RM 4.1 Billion Would Have Allowed Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia(BR1M) Recipients To Receive RM 1,200 As Promised Under The 2013 BN General Election Manifesto Instead Of The Reduced RM 650.(en/bm/cn)

Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Kuala Lumpur On 25.2.2014.

MAS’ huge financial losses over the last 3 years amounting to RM 4.1 billion would have allowed BR1M recipients to receive RM 1,200 as promised under the 2013 BN General Election Manifesto instead of the reduced RM 650. MAS incurred losses of RM 1.17 billion last year, RM 433 million in 2012 and a record loss of RM 2.5 billion in 2011. These RM 4.1 billion in losses over 3 years would nearly make up for the additional sum required to top up the difference in BR1M payments from RM650 (which costs RM4.5 billion) to RM 1,200.

There is no sense of crisis or a turnaround plan at MAS to stem the bleeding of financial losses. Whilst MAS may think that these losses are sustainable because MAS still have cash balances of M3.9 billion as at end of last year, it would be irresponsible if not suicidal to continue with the “business as usual” attitude. MAS owners, Khazanah, must seek decisive surgical solutions by coming to terms with the fact that MAS, with its current cost structure, is just not viable.

Attack Against Malaysiakini Is The Latest In A Campaign Of Intimidation That Will Not Cease Until Action Is Taken Against The Merchants Of Hate And Violence.(en/cn)

Press Statement by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in Komtar, George Town on 25 February 2014

In yet another episode of a sustained campaign of hate and intimidation against freedom and public order, the Malaysiakini office in Bangsar Utama, Kuala Lumpur was attacked with red paint and a package containing a duck carcass and a photo of Seputeh MP Teresa Kok taped on it.

This comes hot on the heels of other similar attacks on Teresa Kok. Last week, her office was splashed with red paint and a dead chicken. Previously, a group of self-proclaimed Muslim NGOs not only demonstrated against her, but even offered a bounty of RM 1,200 to anyone who can slap her and record the incident on video. According to Malaysiakini, all these incidents are believed to be linked to Teresa’s controversial political satire video clip entitled “Onederful Malaysia CNY 2014.”

Numerous police reports have been lodged, and although many of these incidents including the threat to harm Teresa took place publicly and were recorded by the media, no action has been taken on the culprits.

ENOUGH WATER FOR PENANG STATE HIGH DEMAND DURING THIS DRY SEASON. NO NEED FOR WATER RATIONING NOW

Press Statement by Chairman of PBAPP, YAB Lim Guan Eng
in Komtar, George Town, Penang on 20/2/2014

ENOUGH WATER FOR PENANG STATE HIGH DEMAND DURING THIS DRY SEASON. NO NEED FOR WATER RATIONING NOW.

From the information provided by the management of Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP), the Penang State Government informs Penang consumers that PBAPP is ready to face the dry weather. Every year we ensure that the water levels in the dams are at the maximum level at beginning of January. In fact, the dry spell is not an unusual phenomenon as it is an annual occurrence and expects the dry weather to last until April when the inter-monsoon season starts.

The water level at the Air Itam Dam is at 71% capacity and sufficient for 70 days of supply, Mengkuang Dam is at 50.5% capacity and sufficient for 84 days of supply while Teluk Bahang Dam is at 91% capacity which is sufficient for 277 days of supply. There is no need for water rationing now.

Penang Will Counter UMNO’s Dangerous Games Of Playing With The Fires Of Racial And Religious Hatred With The Weapons Of Social Justice, Economic Prosperity, Good Governance And Clean Leadership.(en/cn)

Jade Emperor Festival Or 8th Day Of Chinese New Year Message By Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng In Komtar, George Town On 7.2.2014.

During this year’s Chinese New Year festivities, the regular topic of discussion in family reunion gatherings is how the toxic atmosphere of playing with the fires of racial and religious hatred has paralysed the pursuit of happiness and hastened the brain drain by accelerating the exodus of human talent. Penang will counter UMNO’s dangerous games of playing with the fires of racial and religious hatred with the weapons of social justice, economic prosperity, good governance and clean leadership.

Recent events coupled with the refusal to address the pressing issues of entrenched corruption and cronyism as well as price hikes that threaten the livelihood of ordinary Malaysians, have lent credence to the view that BN has stopped governing because they no longer know how to rule. The PR Penang state government’s success in becoming the first state in Malaysian history to wipe out poverty and becoming the only state not to raise local services such as quit rent, assessment, business license fees and water tariffs has made UMNO desperate.
