Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng In DAP Headquarters In Kuala Lumpur On 20.4.2013.

Sim Tong Him Can Not Contest Under DAP As Parliamentary Candidate for Kota Melaka And At The Same Time As An Independent State Candidate For Kota Laksamana.

DAP urges DAP Parliamentary candidate for Kota Melaka Sim Tong Him to publicly withdraw as an independent candidate for the Kota Laksamana state seat as well as declaring full support for DAP official state candidate Lai Kuen Ban. By putting himself as an independent candidate for Kota Laksamana against Lai Kuen Ban, Sim is doing not only the party a great disservice but also set back the hopes of Melaka voters who had wanted to see a change of government in Malaysia from BN to PR.

Speech on “Agenda For Electoral and Democratic Reforms”

1. Introduction and Salutations

2. First of all, I would like to congratulate the organizing committee for putting together this very important international conference on the 13th General Elections in Malaysia. This will be the most watched and most scrutinized elections in Malaysian history, both domestically and internationally. For the first time in electoral history, there is a real possibility that the Barisan Nasional can lose power through the ballot box. For the first time in electoral history, the opposition Pakatan Rakyat coalition presents a credible and reliable alternative to the BN. Pakatan has shown that it can govern effectively at the state level and has presented a clear set of policies and priorities when we win power in Putrajaya.

3. The first ever Pakatan Rakyat Manifesto, launched on the 25th of February, already outlines an ambitious agenda for electoral and democratic reforms.

Attract And Retain Human Talent By Adopting A Flat 15% Personal Income Tax For All Experts Whether Returning To Or Already In Malaysia And Build Future Human Capital With Free Wifi Services In Public Places Throughout Malaysia To Increase Mobile Internet Usage And Broadband Penetration Amongst The Young.(en/cn)

Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng And MP For Bagan In Kuala Lumpur on 7.1.2013.

DAP calls on the BN Federal government to be serious about its Economic Transformation Programme’s goal to generate human capital formation following its flip flop in the RM200 smartphone rebate scheme costing RM300 million and double-standards in implementing the 15% flat tax rate under the Returning Experts Programme(REP) but not enjoyed by local experts with similar skill-sets. The RM 200 smartphone rebate can only achieve its purpose of increasing mobile internet usage amongst the young if it is accompanied by the provision of free wifi services in all public places throughout Malaysia whether in cities or towns, in villages or estates.

The Prime Minister announcement in last year’s Budget in September, that Malaysians between 21 and 30 who earned under RM3,000 a month could get a rebate of RM200 on handphones for smartphones costing less than RM500, did not fully fulfil its objective of helping the young who can not afford to buy a smartphone. The BN Federal government was forced to flip-flop and remove the RM500 price cap to ensure that it will not deprive lower-income youths of this privilege.

The Prime Minister’s Twin Promises Of Building A Monorail And 20,000 Units Of Affordable Housing Only If BN Wins Penang Is A Clear Attempt To Buy Votes And A Recognition Of BN’s Failure To Deliver Its Past Promises. (en/cn)

Press Statement By Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng In Komtar, George Town On 9.12.2012

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s twin promises of building a monorail and 20,000 units of affordable housing only if BN wins Penang is a clear attempt to buy votes and a recognition of BN’s failure to deliver its past promises. I doubt Penang voters are impressed for two reasons.

One, such promises are within the jurisdiction of the Federal government and it is thus their public responsibility and natural duty to take care of public housing and public transport from the tax receipts collected, including from Penangites. Two, these promise are nothing new as they have been promised before, especially by former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi when he was Prime Minister during the 2006 Chinese New Year

Speech by the Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang, at the MCCBCHST Penang Inter-Religious Goodwill Dinner (en/cn)

Speech by the Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang, at the MCCBCHST Penang Inter-Religious Goodwill Dinner, 2 December 2012 In In MBA, Burma Road:

It gives me great pleasure to be here tonight to engage together with the various religious groups in Penang – the Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Taoist and also our Muslim brothers in the spirit of peace and harmony. This spirit of goodwill as exemplified in tonight’s dinner augurs well for the future of religious harmony and understanding for the rakyat of Penang in particular, and the nation as a whole.

In today’s ever-shrinking global village, there is increasing interaction between followers of various faiths. Depending on how this happens, it can be for the better or for the worse. If we rub shoulders in a friendly way tempered with mutual understanding and respect, peace is fostered. However, when people are rubbed the wrong way, enmity is stirred up instead. Yet the most common and proven resolution for inter-religious differences and misunderstandings is by face-to-face dialogues between men and women of faith and good will.

Delivering Penang’s Promise Of Success To Those Who Are Honest, Work Hard, Invest In The Future And Follow Rules In A Penang That Is Clean, Green, Safe And Healthy.(en/bm/cn)

Opening Speech By DAP Secretary-General And Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng During The DAP Penang State Annual Convention On 2.12.2012 At Red Rock Hotel.

Let us all begin by thanking the people of Penang for their support during these five years on DAP’s historic mission to establish a clean and people-centric government in Penang. Let us not forget you the leaders and members, who have stood steadfastly by the DAP over these last 46 years through all the pain and sorrow, overcoming all the trials and tribulations so as to ensure that the party survive to serve the rakyat.

DAP can stand up proudly that we have demonstrated that whilst we are good in opposition, we are even better as a government. When we won power in 2008, there were some doubts on our ability to govern due to our lack of experience and even some concern on our competency as we were all politicians who had spent time in prison.

The Federal Government Should Apologise To All Internal Security Act(ISA) Detainees, Immediately Release All Remaining Detainees And Turn Kamunting Detention Camp Into A Museum (en/bm/cn)

25th Anniversary Operasi Lallang Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Kuala Lumpur On 27.10.2012.

The Federal Government Should Apologise To All Internal Security Act(ISA) Detainees, Immediately Release All Remaining Detainees And Turn Kamunting Detention Camp Into A Museum As A Reminder Of The Importance Of Freedom And Human Rights As Well As Heal The Nation From The Trauma Of Arbitrary Detention Without Trial.

DAP urges the Federal government to apologise to all Internal Security Act(ISA) detainees, immediately release all remaining ISA detainees and turn Kamunting Detention Camp into a museum as a reminder of the importance of freedom and human rights as well as heal the nation from the trauma of arbitrary detention without trial merely for opposing BN.

25 years ago on 27 October 1987, I was amongst the first victims of Operasi Lalang detained under the ISA by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. I remember as a newly-elected MP for Kota Melaka, how stunned I was to hear that I was a threat to national security who would cause the country to descend into chaos, ruin and riots if I was not arrested. Then followed the dark days of solitary confinement, endless interoggation and intimidation to force me to recant which I managed to endure, survive and prevail.

Tan Sri Nor Mohamad Yakcop Must Come Clean On The Bank Negara Foreign Exchange(Forex) Scandal And Fully Account For The Losses Of RM15.8 Billion From 1992-3 But Estimated To Reach RM30 Billion.(en/bm/cn)

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamad Yakcop must come clean on the Bank Negara forex scandal and fully account for the losses of RM15.8 billion from 1992-3 but estimated to reach RM30 billion. According to the Bank Negara’S financial report, Bank Negara recorded losses of RM10.1 billion in 1992 and RM5.7 billion in 1993.

However when replying to my question in Parliament 2 weeks ago, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Donald Lim only admitted to the RM 5.7 billion in losses in 1993. This gives rise to question about the RM10.1 billion losses in 1992 or even a total loss of up to RM30 billion as former Bank Negara senior officer Dr Rosli Yakcop who had worked under Tan Sri Nor had estimated.

Where Is BN’s Menteri Besar Designate And Shadow Cabinet In The 4 PR States (en/bm/cn)

Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Kuala Lumpur On 1.10.2012.

Where Is BN’s Menteri Besar Designate And Shadow Cabinet In The 4 PR States And How Can Abolishing The North-South Highway Toll Lead To A Collapse Of Bursa Malaysia When PLUS Was Taken Private Last Year And Is Not Even Listed On Bursa Malaysia?

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak should practice what he preaches instead of double-standards by directing BN in Kedah, Kelantan, Penang and Selangor to present a shadow EXCO if BN is committed to recapture power in those states. In many respects BN is worse than PR, in that BN not only does not have a shadow cabinet in the PR states but have not even appointed the BN Menteri Besar candidate in Selangor, Kelantan and Kedah.

UMNO’s Confidence In The 3-3-3-1 Formula To Recapture Penang Is Based On An Obedient Tool In The Election Commission(EC), Control Of Mainstream Media To Spread Lies Against PR And Complacency Amongst PR.(en/bm/cn)

Defence Minister and Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confidence yesterday of the success of UMNO’s “3-3-3-1” formula to recapture Penang at the next general elections is based on an obedient tool in the EC, control of mainstream media to spread lies against PR and complacency amongst PR parties. UMNO’s formula involved Umno, MCA and Gerakan adding three seats each and MIC one seat to the existing 11 state assembly seats to win by a majority of one in 21 out of the 40 State assembly seats.

The manipulation of the EC for BN’s own political interests is well-recorded until top officials of EC were recently exposed to be UMNO members. BN’s control of the media has resulted not only in a refusal to highlight PR’s successes in governance but also in sustained personal attack against PR Penang leaders recently based on racism, outright lies of corruption and sexual misconduct. Even my own family members such as my underaged son has not been spared from such vicious lies.
