Press Statement by Chief Minister of Penang on 20/7/2017 @KOMTAR
Today, I would like to announce the formation of Penang STEM Sdn Bhd. STEM, as you know stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM is the umbrella organisation consisting of 6 separate organisations coming together as one. They are :
1. Penang Skill Development Centre (PSDC)
2. Penang Science Cluster (PSC)
3. Karpal Singh Penang Learning Centre (KSPLC)
4. Tech Dome Penang (TDP)
5. @CAT Penang (@CAT)
6. Penang Digital Library (PDL)
Penang STEM Sdn Bhd provides a coherent and synergistic strategy to spearhead STEM learning effectively to every part of Penang, urban as well as rural. STEM education and skills training are critical to Penang, significantly more so in the near future with the advent of Industry 4.0 and the Digital Revolution. We must not only prepare our young for the future but we must also prepare the future for our young.
This new organization will be run by a Board of Directors comprising of myself, Puan Sarul Bahiyah (State Financial Officer), Madam Chang Wing Mow, Madam Loo Lee Lian plus the CEO’s of the member organisations such as Penang Skill Development Centre (PSDC) – Mr Muhamad Ali, Penang Science Cluster (PSC) – Mr Ooi Peng Ee, Tech Dome Penang (TDP) – Dr Khong Yoon Loong and @CAT – Mr Howie Chang.
Penang STEM also has Mr LH Ang as the Advisor and Acting CEO and Mr Johnny Ong as the General Manager. My vision is simple. I want Penang STEM to establish Penang as the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Science and Technology.
I am pleased with what our 6 centres have accomplished so far. Every organisation is unique, impressive and full of activities. In fact just for the later 6 months of 2017, we have a total of our 250 programs, mainly on STEM, available to the public. A lot of these are free or at a very nominal charge.
Now with their coming together to form this complete STEM ecosystem, we can expect a bigger positive impact to our young and youths in STEM education and awareness. I expect to see Penang STEM playing a big role to help create human talent to drive and support the Digital Economy and the 4th Industrial Revolution.
This is the theme of Penang STEM’s logo – to be involved in Industry 4.0 involving Big Data Analytics, Cloud Computing, robotics, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT).
Thank you.
