The state government will continue with efforts to make Penang the most environmentally sound and livable city in Malaysia with our initiative of a “Cleaner, Greener Penang” through Education(Pendidikan), Enforcement(Penguatkuasaan) and Appreciation(Penghargaan).
Our vision to transform Penang into an international city that is the location of choice for investors, destination of choice for tourists and also a habitat of choice for those who desire sustainable living is premised on our human and communications connectivity.
In Penang, the quality of life is a top priority. Today, we are proud that George Town, Penang has moved from its 10th ranking in 2007 to be the 8th most livable city in Asia for 2010. ECA International, the world’s leader in the development and provision of solutions for the management and assignments of employee around the world, has ranked Penang globally at No. 62nd, an improvement from the 74th position in 2007. The 2010 Asia and global ranking have put George Town at par with Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur. This improvement reflects the state government’s commitment to transform Penang into the first state in Malaysia to be green with “No Plastic Bags” campaign, No Polystyrene Containers, tree-planting, free shuttle bus in the city centre, free-wifi and expanding public spaces.
Since the PR government took over the power in 2008, many ministers have commented that the city looks cleaner than before. There must be sustainable living where the problems of cleanliness, crime and traffic congestion are dealt with. To improve effectiveness, our workers shall be equipped with modern equipment with safety facilities that were not provided in the past for both MPPP and MPSP.
