Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Penang On 14.5.2014.
MCA has no right to comment on the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election unless it comes clean by stating the real reason for sitting out of the contest and declare which of the 3 independent candidates that BN is endorsing as the BN proxy. MCA had first given the reason that it did not want to contest as it wanted to concentrate on the constitutional crisis triggered by PAS’ plan to introduce hudud before changing the excuse one day later to MCA having no chance of winning.
By abandoning the first reason of opposing the implementation of hudud, MCA realises that DAP has taken a more consistent stand in opposing not only PAS but also UMNO for working together to implement hudud on Muslims in Kelantan. MCA dare not face the voters on their double-standards of defending UMNO but opposing PAS, when both UMNO and PAS wants to implement hudud in Kelantan.

Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Penang On 11.5.2014.
DAP urges all party leaders and members not to be complacent about the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election on 25 May even though BN and MCA has decided to opt out from this contest.
Like any political party, MCA has a democratic right to contest or not to contest any election. MCA’s decision not to contest the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat on May 25 2014 would normally have been respected, if not for MCA President Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai giving a most ridiculous reason that is both false and self-contradictory.
Liow claimed yesterday that in light of the constitutional crisis triggered by PAS’ intention to implement hudud in Kelantan, MCA decided not to contest in the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election to focus its strength to ensure this did not happen. Liow stressed that MCA had a duty to defend the Federal Constitution and would go around the country to garner support from the people to prevent the implementation of PAS’ hudud laws.

Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Penang On 10.5.2014.
Penang BN chief Teng Chang Yeow should be congratulated for adopting MCA’s dirty tactics of using the mainstream media to either black out or downplay DAP’s replies on their lies over the proposed implementation of hudud law by PAS and UMNO. I will respond to Teng’s latest false attacks against the DAP for telling “three bluffs” on PAS’ intention to implement the hudud law.
I answer Teng’s 3 lies with the expectation that Teng would explain why UMNO President Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak can decide on BN Malaysia’s stand to support PAS implementing hudud on Muslims in Kelantan in Najib’s position as BN Chairman but Teng can not decide on BN Penang position as BN Penang Chairman. In contrast, I can state as Penang Chief Minister, that the PR Penang state government and Penang PR will not implement hudud in Penang as it was never part of PR national or state 2013 general election manifesto.
If the mainstream media obediently fail to publish this in full, Teng need not answer why as Penang BN Chair, he does not possess the same powers over Penang BN as Najib has over BN Malaysia in deciding BN Malaysia’s stand. Is this a classic example of MCA and Gerakan “being in government but do not rule” or is Teng just simply being quietly obedient to UMNO?

Speech By Chief Minister of Penang Lim Guan Eng During The Official Opening of the Karpal Singh Penang Learning Centre & Penang Badminton Academy At Jalan Kaki Bukit, Bukit Gelugor, Pulau Pinang On Friday, 9 May 2014.
First let me thank Dato’ Seri Kalimullah and ECM Libra Foundation not only for the RM 4 million donation for which we are grateful but also for the kind suggestion to name it as Karpal Singh Penang Learning Centre. We will accept as directed. Thank you.
We live in an ever fast-changing world environment where the one assured path to success is a sound education system. Not only can education reduce income inequality, but it too, can provide social mobility and economic opportunity to all. In short education is the lifeboat to our future.
The World Bank in its report notes that a lynchpin of Malaysia’s transformation into a high-income, sustainable and inclusive economy is ensuring the country has a high-performing education system. It added that “Access to schooling is a necessary but insufficient condition for building human capital that will propel economic growth. In addition to ensuring the system has the broadest possible coverage (quantity), the quality of education is perhaps even more critical,”.

Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Kuala Lumpur On 9.5.2014.
MCA Deputy President Wee Ka Siong is confused or trying to have the best of both worlds after falsely blaming Chinese Malaysiakini for “twisting” his earlier remark that he did not say that MCA will leave BN but will only review the party’s position if Umno supports hudud. However, Chinese Malaysiakini never twisted what Wee had said and reported correctly that Wee had said that a review of MCA’s position in BN did not mean that MCA would withdraw from BN.
Unfortunately no one understands Wee twisted logic, because there is no point in reviewing MCA’s position in BN if it does not mean that MCA would withdraw from BN. How can Wee say his “conscience is clear” when his illogical reasoning makes his political motives so unprincipled? Clearly Wee is consistent by following MCA President Liow Tiong Lai’s double-standards of “saying one thing but does another” when MCA defends UMNO for supporting the implementation of hudud in Kelantan and yet opposes PAS for doing exactly the same thing.
Wee should also explain why should MCA go back into Cabinet now when Wee is talking about review when UMNO has flip-flopped its position from opposing the implementation of hudud to fully supporting PAS implementing hudud in Kelantan?

Kenyataan Akhbar Ketua Menteri Pulau Pinang Dan Setiausaha Agung DAP Lim Guan Eng Di Komtar, George Town Pada 9.5.2014

Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Penang On 8.5.2014.
MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong had said that if Umno votes in favour of the hudud Bill expected to be tabled by Kelantan, MCA and other component parties in BN, made up of non-Muslims, might review their position in the BN coalition. However, Wee also told Chinese Malaysiakini later that a review of MCA’s position did not mean that MCA would withdraw from BN.
Wee’s verbal acrobatics is confusing as if review is not withdrawal what does Wee exactly means by review? MCA should say what it means and means what it says. Unless MCA makes a clear and definite clarification that review of MCA’s position in BN is withdrawal from BN, this is another meaningless political sandiwara. Why should MCA go back into Cabinet now when Wee is talking about review when UMNO has flip-flopped its position from opposing the implementation of hudud to fully supporting PAS implementing hudud in Kelantan?

Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Penang On 5.5.2014.
MCA President Liow Tiong Lai should stop be an UMNO apologist and take tuition lessons on courage from his predecessor Dr Chua Soi Lek to bravely oppose UMNO instead of continuing to defend UMNO’s instigation of PAS to implement hudud laws in Kelantan. Liow had shown himself to be untrustworthy and not a man of honour when he dishonoured a written pact made with Chua prior to last year’s MCA party elections.
To cover-up his abject failure to criticise UMNO for instigating PAS to implement hudud in Kelantan, Liow is relying fully on the mainstream media to launch an all-out campaign of lies and distortion against DAP. Even though these lies that DAP is responsible for PAS implementing hudud in Kelantan without mentioning the role played by UMNO, have been repeatedly exposed and rebutted, the lies and distortion in the mainstream media continues. DAP advises the public to refer to online media for a fair, balanced and accurate coverage.

Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Kuala Lumpur On 4.5.2014.
Is MCA so hard-up for government posts that MCA dares not scold UMNO for instigating PAS to implement hudud on Muslims in Kelantan? Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak stated today that he will decide on the right time for MCA to rejoin cabinet following MCA’s special resolution in February 2014 to disavow and repudiate MCA’s own 2013 general election promise not to accept any government posts.
Clearly the fear of not getting any government posts from Najib has caused MCA President Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai to panic and not scold UMNO Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom for instigating PAS in Parliament on March 27 to implement hudud on Muslims in Kelantan. Unlike MCA’s reflex submissiveness to UMNO, DAP had publicly criticised PAS for falling into UMNO’s trap to work with UMNO to implement hudud in Kelantan.

2014 World Press Freedom Day Message By Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng In Komtar, George Town On 3.5.2014.
Press freedom is a fundamental human right enshrined in Article 19 of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”
Many countries with press freedom enjoy not only basic human rights but also a functioning democracy and economic prosperity. It is no accident that the country that respects press freedom the most also happens to be amongst the wealthiest and its citizens live with human dignity.
Continue reading “Press freedom is threatened as much by authoritarian regimes closing down newspapers and detaining reporters, as by media practitioners who abuse their power by publishing lies and refusing to respect the principle of a right of reply.(en/bm/cn)”
