DAP CEC regretfully accepted the decision of Bukit Glugor MP Karpal Singh to step aside as DAP National Chairman.(En/Cn)

Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Kuala Lumpur On 11.4.2014.

The DAP CEC at its meeting on 7.4.2014 regretfully accepted the decision of Bukit Glugor MP Karpal Singh to step aside as DAP National Chairman until he disposes his court case. Karpal is appealing against the Kuala Lumpur High Court decision, which fined him RM4,000 for sedition on March 11, effectively disqualifying him as DAP MP for Bukit Glugor and also barred him from holding all political posts,

Even though Karpal had stepped down as DAP National Chairman in compliance with the Societies Act, the DAP CEC resolved unanimously to reserve the CEC position vacant and await Karpal’s return. In the interim, Deputy National Chairman and MP for Cheras Tan Kok Wai, shall be the Acting National Chairman. DAP also strongly condemned the Attorney-General Chambers for filing a cross-appeal to the Court of Appeal seeking a heavier sentence.

The Court of Appeal could impose the maximum RM5,000 fine or a maximum of 3 years jail. This would see Karpal being put behind bars as well as end his political career, a long-held dream of the BN leaders. By wanting to jail Karpal at all costs is clearly political motivated to satisfy the wishes of the UMNO masters and does not demonstrates any commitment to respect for international human rights, justice and freedom of expression.

Further, DAP considers it deplorable that the Attorney-General Chambers appears to have sacrificed their own professional competence by outsourcing prosecutorial work to better serve and realize the wishes of their political masters. DAP is challenging the RoS Registrar of Societies (RoS) for its failure to recognise our office-bearers elected last September.

The hiring of Umno lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah on behalf of the RoS in a civil action with the DAP over our party’s internal polls follows Muhammad Shafee’s representation of AG Chambers against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Is the Attorney-General chambers so lacking in professional and competent lawyers that they have to outsource for hired “fighters” to fix up political opponents of BN?

The hiring of Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee is a signal that the BN is going all out to finish off not only Karpal but also the DAP. DAP must stay united and focused to fervently defend Karpal and oppose any attempts by BN stooges to undermine or de-register the party.
