Malaysia should preserve our 130 million year old rainforest by stopping the wanton destruction of 544,011 hectares of our permanent forest reserves over the last 10 years(2006-2015) in Peninsular Malaysia. As we celebrate World Environment Day on 5th June, the destruction of rainforests has been one of the main contributory causes of climate change leading to global warming. Further, cutting down permanent forest reserves, removes a green lung to clean the air from carbon dioxide and gives a fresh oxygen in return.<\/p>\n

There is an urgent need to stop cutting down permanent forest reserves that had already been gazetted for protection, but then was degazetted to allow timber loggers or crony developers to earn huge profits at the expense of the environment. In Peninsular Malaysia(see graph) Pahang was the biggest culprit cutting down 161,379 hectares over a 10 year period, followed by Kelantan 157,919 hectares and Perak 74,032 hectares.<\/p>\n

The only state that did not touch a single square inch of permanent forest reserves is Penang. Even the smallest state in Malaysia, Perlis, had cut down 167 hectares of permanent forest reserves. Malaysia can still save our 130 million year old rainforest by increasing and not reducing permanent forest reserves. It is still not too late to do so if there is concerted effort and commitment by all parties, including compensatory payments by the Federal government to dissuade state governments from irresponsibly cutting down their permanent forest reserves.<\/p>\n

Then only can we celebrate World Environment Day meaningfully to allow not only the Earth to breathe but all humanity to enjoy clean air. Having clean air and clean water is a natural and God-given right that is a basic duty of all Federal and state governments to provide as a basic human right to its citizens.<\/p>\n

\nMalaysia harus mengekalkan hutan hujan tropika yang berusia 130 juta tahun dengan menghentikan segala kemusnahan yang sengaja ke atas hutan simpanan kekal bersaiz 544,011 hektar di Semenanjung Malaysia yang telah bermula sejak 10 tahun lalu (2006 \u2013 2015). Seperti sambutan Hari Alam Sekitar Sedunia pada 5 Jun, kemusnahan hutan hujan tropika merupakan salah satu faktor penyumbang utama yang mengakibatkan perubahan iklim yang membawa kepada pemanasan global. Tambahan pula, penebangan pokok dalam hutan simpanan kekal telah menjana impak pelupusan pokok-pokok hijau yang membersihkan udara dengan pengurangan karbon dioksida dan penambahan oksigen sebagai pulangan..<\/p>\n

Di sini wujudnya suatu pemintaan segera dimana penebangan hutan simpanan kekal yang telah diwarta untuk perlindungan harus diberhentikan dengan serta-merta dimana hutan tersebut telah dikeluarkan daripada warta memberi peluang kepada pembalak ataupun kroni pemaju untuk mengaut untung yang besar atas pengorbanan alam sekitar. Di Semananjung Malaysia (rujukan kepada graf), Pahang merupakan penyumbang terbesar di mana sebanyak 161,369 hektar hutan telah ditebang dalam masa 10 tahun, diikuti oleh Kelantan 157,919 hektar dan Perak 74,032 hektar.<\/p>\n

Pulau Pinang merupakan satu-satunya negeri yang tidak pernah menebang hutan simpanan kekal seinci pun. Negeri yang terkecil di Malaysia iaitu Perlis turut menebang sebanyak 167 hektar hutan simpanan kekal. Malaysia masih sempat menyelamatkan hutan hujan tropika yang berusia 130 juta tahun ini dengan meningkatkan dan tidak mengurangkan kawasan hutan simpanan kekalnya. Ini merupakan suatu tindakan yang masih belum terlambat jika semua pihak yang terlibat mempunyai komitmen yang sama dan menggembleng tenaga dalam usaha tersebut termasuk bayaran pampasan yang dikenakan oleh Kerajaan Persekutuan untuk menghalang Kerajaan Negeri supaya tidak menebang hutan simpanan kekal secara tidak bertanggung jawab.<\/p>\n

Dengan cari ini barulah kita boleh menyambut Hari Alam Sekitar Dunia dengan penuh bermakna. Kita bukan sahaja membenarkan dunia bernafas tetapi semua insan dapat menikmati udara yang bersih. Udara dan sumber air yang bersih merupakan hak semulajadi kurnian Tuhan. Ini juga merupakan suatu tanggungjawab asas di mana Kerajaan Persekutuan dan Kerajaan Negeri harus membekalkan hak asasi manusia ini kepada semua rakyatnya.<\/p>\n
