DAP wishes to extend Deepavali greetings to all Malaysian Hindus. At the same time, we wish to reiterate our deepest condolences to the families of the 6 victims of the Johor\u2019s Sultanah Aminah Hospital, who died during a tragic fire at the Intensive Care Unit on 25 October 2016. DAP also wishes to extend our sympathies to Selangor residents celebrating Deepavali without water supply following sabotage of the water sources by traitorous criminals out to harm the health of the people.<\/p>\n
Further the rise in cooking oil prices have caused a shortage of cooking oil, showing how Malaysians continue to suffer from the negative impact of the RM52 billion 1MDB and RM4.2 billion donation scandals. BN Federal Ministers are ridiculous to say that the cooking oil shortage would allow us to eat less cooking oil and thus stay healthy. <\/p>\n
At the same time, those fighting for national salvation by demanding full accountability for the 1MDB and donation scandals are being threatened with action of breaking their oath of secrecy for speaking up in Parliament. DAP appeals to the Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia not to be seen to be trying to cover up debate of the scandals by disallowing debate, on the grounds that it is subjudice. DAP strongly disagrees it is subjudice when the lawsuit or court action is pursued not in Malaysia but in the United States. <\/p>\n
Further the Speaker should not allow himself to be dragged into this scandal and controversy by trying to silence former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, ex-second finance minister Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah, and ex-rural and regional development minister Shafie Apdal \u2013 all of which touched on 1MDB \u2013 on the grounds that the 3 had breached House rules. Muhyiddin in his speech highlighted how the cabinet was not consulted on the formation of 1MDB, and was kept in the dark about its finances until the scandal broke out.<\/p>\n
Husni had asked the government why 1MDB was formed and if any action would be taken against 1MDB’s management for channelling the company’s funds to the “wrong places”. He also asked why the government was only being paid in 2020 for the sale of a 60 percent stake in the Bandar Malaysia project to a Chinese firm. Husni also queried the government if Malaysia would be portrayed in a negative light should 1MDB lose its arbitration case in London to Abu Dhabi-based International Petroleum Investment Co, and pay out between USD 4billion to US$6.5 billion.<\/p>\n
DAP also strongly opposes and condemns the proposed motion to suspend Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng for 6 months over Lim\u2019s remarks relating to the Speaker disallowing debate on the US Department of Justice\u2019s investigation into 1MDB. Lim had already been suspended for 2 days which should be sufficient punishment. Suspending Lim for another 6 months would not be proportionate but excessive.<\/p>\n
Even though these unfortunate events may have lent a sombre atmosphere, the essence of the Festival of Lights where good prevails over evil must be celebrated. Malaysian must keep faith that there are more good people in Malaysia and provided we do not lose hope, Malaysians can still see the light at the end of the tunnel where good will finally win over bad, integrity over corruption and people\u2019s power over crony power.<\/p>\n
