As we mark the first year anniversary of the sudden departure of DAP National Chairman Karpal Singh, we mourn the party\u2019s and the people\u2019s loss. Whilst we can never replace the pain and sorrow felt by his family, Malaysia is clearly poorer without Karpal. <\/p>\n

Karpal pushed the party\u2019s profile as a Malaysian party and advanced our cause for justice, freedom and democracy. He did not just simply create history by becoming the first non-Chinese DAP National Chair but used his legal prowess to demonstrate the true meaning of Malaysian Malaysia, by defending the rights of everyone regardless of race, religion, background and even nationality. Indeed for Karpal, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.<\/p>\n

I wish to relive Karpal the person. Karpal Singh was one of the few DAP leaders who radiated an inner light that gave hope to many and remembered for his innate goodness. He was respected because he cared about other people, and was willing to be a good listener with the unique gift to make the individual feel valued.<\/p>\n

Karpal fitted his life around the needs of others more than to his own. In the process, he had to endure some pain and loss. This pattern of defeat, recognition, redemption was repeated again and again. But he always told me that pain and suffering was part of the struggle and even useful to inject iron into the soul. His constant refrain was, \u201cLook at Kit(Lim Kit Siang) and me. We both lost in elections and both went to prison but were never weaker because of it\u201d. He believed defeat was not the end but a necessary test of our faith in principles.<\/p>\n

Karpal was unfailingly loyal to his old and trusted comrades, especially Kit and Dr Chen Man Hin, and others who had stayed on with the party when we were nearly wiped out electorally. He shared in the joys, sorrows and pains of fighting an oppressive ruling regime.<\/p>\n

I miss Karpal the leader, the mentor and the person who not only gave hope but inspired us with the optimism to hang on tightly to our principles. I miss his hearty genuine laughter filled with good cheer that would lift our spirits to just pick ourselves up again and again after being knocked down. Most of all I miss his indomitable spirit to simply carry on, no matter that the odds are never in your favour.<\/p>\n

Rest In Peace, Karpal- you will always be remembered.<\/p>\n

Memperingati ulangtahun pertama pemergian Karpal Singh – Merindui Karpal<\/p>\n

Sambil kita memperingati ulangtahun pertama pemergian yang tidak diduga Pengerusi Kebangsaan DAP Karpal Singh, kita meratapi kehilangan yang dirasakan oleh parti dan juga orang ramai. Sementara kita tidak mungkin memberi galang ganti buat perit dan sedih yang ditanggung ahli keluarganya, Malaysia turut jelas bertambah fakir tanpa Karpal di kalangan kita.<\/p>\n

Karpal telah memajukan profil parti sebagai sebuah parti rakyat Malaysia, dan membawa perjuangan demi keadilan, kebebasan dan demokrasi ke tahap yang lebih tinggi. Beliau tidak sekadar mencipta sejarah dengan menjadi Pengerusi Kebangsaan DAP bukan-Cina yang pertama, tetapi juga menggunakan kemahiran undang-undangnya untuk memperlihatkan makna Malaysian Malaysia, dengan mempertahankan hak semua orang tanpa mengira kaum, agama, latar belakang mahupun kewarganegaraan. Ternyata bagi Karpal, kezaliman di mana-mana adalah ancaman bagi keadilan di serata dunia.<\/p>\n

Saya ingin memperingati Karpal, sebagai seorang insan. Karpal Singh merupakan salah seorang daripada sebilangan kecil pemimpin DAP yang menyinarkan cahaya pengharapan kepada ramai orang, dan diingati atas sifat kebaikannya yang semulajadi. Beliau dihormati kerana kepeduliannya terhadap orang ramai, dan rela menjadi seorang pendengar yang baik dengan kemahiran untuk menjadikan seseorang merasa dihargai.<\/p>\n

Karpal menyesuaikan hidupnya dengan keperluan orang lain lebih daripada dirinya sendiri. Dalam proses ini, beliau telah terpaksa melalui beberapa kesengsaraan. Corak kekalahan, pengiktirafan, penebusan diulang berkali-kali. Namun beliau sentiasa memberitahu saya bahawa kesengsaraan adalah sebahagian daripada perjuangan malah berguna untuk menyuntik kekuatan ke dalam jati diri. Beliau selalu mengulang sebut, \u201cTengok Kit (Lim Kit Siang) dan saya. Kami berdua pernah kalah dan pilihanraya dan kedua-duanya pernah masuk penjara tetapi kami tidak dilemahkan kerananya\u201d. Beliau percaya bahawa kekalahan bukanlah penghujungnya tetapi ujian wajib ke atas kepercayaan dan prinsip.<\/p>\n

Karpal sentiasa setia dengan kawan-kawan dan teman seperjuangannya sejak dahulu, terutamanya Kit dan Dr Chen Man Hin, serta mereka yang kekal bersama parti ketika ia hampir lenyap dalam pilihanraya. Beliau berkongsi kegembiraan, kesedihan dan kesengsaraan berjuang melawan rejim pemerintah yang menindas.<\/p>\n

Saya merindui Karpal sang pemimpin, mentor dan insan yang bukan sahaja memberi harapan tetapi memberi inspirasi kepada kami dengan optimisme untuk kekal berpegang kepada prinsip. Saya merindui gelak tawanya yang ikhlas yang akan membangkitkan semula semangat kami untuk bangkit lagi dan lagi setelah tewas. Paling penting sekali saya merindui semangat wajanya untuk terus berjuang, walaupun nasib tidak pernah menyebelahi. <\/p>\n

Berehatlah dengan tenang, Karpal – saudara akan sentiasa dalam kenangan.<\/p>\n
