DAP\u2019s opposition to implementing hudud is consistent not only before but also now, not only in Penang but also throughout Malaysia, not only against PAS but also against UMNO, not against Islam but against an unconstitutional act. Following my unanswered challenge that other state governments should follow my announcement as Penang Chief Minister that hudud not be implemented in Penang, DAP regrets the lies by MCA in claiming that DAP opposes implementing hudud only in Penang but not in Malaysia.<\/p>\n
DAP opposes the joint technical committee on hudud set up by Putrajaya and the Kelantan state government to study the implementation of hudud in Kelantan. Why has MCA not dared to convey their objections to UMNO, especially the failure of MCA President Liow Tiong Lai to raise this personally with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when Liow attended the UMNO 68th Anniversary celebrations in Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur last Sunday.<\/p>\n

More pressure should be exerted on UMNO to dissolve this technical committee because it was Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyidin Yassin that had initiated the idea of this joint technical committee on hudud, that was accepted by PAS. MCA and Gerakan must accept the reality that it was UMNO that instigated PAS to implement hudud in Kelantan.<\/p>\n
BN had deceived voters in the 2013 general elections because they had told voters that BN opposed enforcing the hudud. In 25 September 2011, Najib himself had said in Kampar that the BN Government will not enforce hudud law in Malaysia because its implementation must take into consideration the environment and the reality.<\/p>\n
Unlike UMNO, PAS has been supporting hudud right from the beginning. However PAS admits that implementing hudud is not in the PR common policy or in the 2013 general election manifesto because of opposition from the DAP.<\/p>\n
All this changed on 27 March 2014, when BN changed its position on hudud after UMNO switched its support to implementing hudud in Kelantan. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom was representing the BN Federal government when he said in Parliament on March 27 that \u201cthe federal government will be ready to work with any state government that is ready to implement hudud including Kelantan, because Umno Kelantan assemblypersons had supported the passing of Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment II to implement hudud in 1993\u201d. Jamil even suggested non-government members of Parliament to table a private member’s’ bill for that purpose.<\/p>\n
No one is surprised that Najib has so easily ignored and dismissed MCA and Gerakan by changing the BN government position on the implementation of the hudud law for Muslims in Kelantan. Najib\u2019s flip-flop on hudud has exposed the double-standards, hypocrisy and lies of MCA in opposing the implementation of the hudud law only by PAS but not by UMNO. <\/p>\n
For that reason, MCA and Gerakan must pressure UMNO more to abandon implementing hudud because apart from proposing the joint technical committee on hudud, the private member\u2019s bill on hudud in Kelantan by PAS was also suggested by UMNO. Furthermore, it is not PAS but UMNO with the largest bloc of 88 MPs, that will finally determine whether hudud on Muslims becomes law in Kelantan.<\/p>\n
