The horrendous statistics of at least one shooting per day over the last 8 days, have heightened concerns over public safety during the Hari Raya celebrations. Gun victims are so common that not only those with criminal backgrounds are shot in broad daylight, even the founder of Arab-Malaysian Development Bank Hussain Ahmad Najadi has also become a victim in the centre of Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n

Clearly, rising crime is no longer a perception but an indictment of the police failure and manipulation of statistics by the Federal government to give a false impression of falling crime. To fight crime there must be resources placed on both technology and manpower.<\/p>\n

Malaysia can only be safer from crime by increasing the police personnel patrolling the streets to fight crime from the present 10,150(9%) to at least 56,000(50%). There is an urgent need for the Home Ministry and the police to move away from its unhealthy obsession on political opponents of BN but focus instead on criminals. <\/p>\n

Further, there must be resources not only on CCTVs and street lights but also on trained staff monitoring CCTVs. Statistics do not lie and in a written parliamentary repy to the DAP MP for Kulai Teo Nie Ching this month, the Minister of Home Affairs said that, \u201cof a total 112,583 police personnel in uniform, 10,150(9%) are in the Criminal Investigation Department, 4,224(3.8%) in the Narcotic Criminal Investigation and 1,663(1.4%) in Commercial Investigation Department.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is unacceptable that only 9% of the police personnel are directly involved in fighting crime in the streets. Even if we include the Narcotics and Commercial Crime, only 14.2% of police personnel are focused on fighting crime in the streets. These numbers are too low. The number of police personnel involved in fighting crime should not be 14.2% but at least 50%. In other words there should be at least 56,000 police personnel in uniform patrolling the streets and not the present 16,037.<\/p>\n

How can Malaysians celebrate Hari Raya when they are concerned about their safety when they balik kampong or the safety of their property left behind in their empty homes? The public has a right to ask why they should have such public safety concerns when the allocation for the police has increased by 65% in the period of 2007-2012, from RM4.22 billion in 2007 to RM5.82 billion in 2010 and RM6.98 billion in 2012.<\/p>\n

The public did not pay for policemen to monitor or deal with political opponents of BN but to fight criminals. For this reason, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak can offer the best Hari Raya gift by announcing an increase in the police personnel fighting crime from the present 10,150 to at least 56,000.<\/p>\n
