DAP express disappointment at the nervous haste of Deputy Education Minister II P Kamalanathan in quickly closing the controversy of requiring non-Muslim students to use the shower room as a makeshift canteen in Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Pristana in Sungai Buloh during the fasting month of Ramadan without giving a full public explanation. The parents of 1,300 students in the school, including the 28 non-Muslim students, want an answer to the inconsistencies and self-contradictions in facts and events, and all Malaysians want the truth and nothing but the truth to be revealed before they are convinced by Kamalanathan\u2019s claims that this is not an issue related to race or religion.<\/p>\n
Such nervous hastiness in closing the controversy will be seen as a cover-up unless Kamalanathan can explain why the parents were not informed since March this year that the canteen will be relocated to the shower room because of renovations. Further why were there no signs of renovation of the canteen? If the renovation has been only recently completed, why was the canteen not reopened? Lastly how can Kamalanathan fail to address the parents\u2019 complaints that their children were only asked to eat in the makeshift canteen in the shower room two days into Ramadan?<\/p>\n
Kamalanathan said that he was only solving the problem by relocating the canteen out of the shower room. Solving the problem is one thing but punishing the one responsible is equally important to ensure that such incidents do not recur. The public needs to know how such an incident could have happened in the first place because it is humiliating for children to eat in a shower room that is converted into a makeshift canteen.<\/p>\n
A strong message must be sent that civil servants must respect the sensitivities and rights of all communities. Failure to do so will only accelerate the negative perception that the sensitivities and rights of non-Muslims can be trampled upon without punishment. Such negative perception can easily turn to a feeling of victimisation by non-Muslims. The failure of the BN Federal government to punish unapologetic Perkasa leaders for its racist and extremist calls to burn the Bible and make anti-Hindu insults, when the young Alvivi couple was rightfully charged in court for being disrespectful to Islam even though they had apologised, clearly does not help to refute allegations of double-standards.<\/p>\n
DAP is saddened by the pictures of policemen with heavy weapons standing guard outside a school in Sungai Buloh, holding back angry parents and their friends. Does Malaysian schools have to deteriorate to this level where policemen with weapons are required to stand guard outside schools not to protect the school against criminals but against angry parents seeking answers and justice?<\/p>\n

DAP kecewa dengan cara tergesa-gesa Timbalan Menteri Pendidikan II, P Kamalanathan dalam menutup kes kontroversi pelajat bukan Islam disuruh menggunakan bilik mandi sebagai kantin sementara di Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Pristana di Sungai Buloh di dalam bulan puasa tanpa memberi sebarang penjelasan kepada umum. Ibu bapa kepada 1,300 pelajar di sekolah tersebut, termasuk 28 pelajar bukan Islam, mahukan penjelasan terhadap fakta dan kenyataan yang sangat tidak konsisten dan bercanggah berkenaan kejadian terbabit. Seluruh rakyat Malaysia juga mahukan kebenaran didedahkan sebelum mereka boleh yakin dengan dakwaan Kamalanathan bahawa ini bukanlah isu berkaitan kaum atau agama.<\/p>\n
Sifat tergesa-gesa yang sedemikian dalam menyelesaikan kes kontroversi tersebut akan dilihat sebagai usaha untuk menutup kebenaran, kecuali jika Kamalanathan boleh menjelaskan kenapa ibu bapa tidak dimaklumkan sejak Mac tahun ini bahawa kantin akan dipindahkan ke bilik mandi atas sebab kerja baik pulih. Tambahan pula, kenapa tidak ada tanda-tanda kerja baik pulih terhadap kantin terbabit? Jika kerja baik pulih telah pun selesai, kenapa pula kantin tersebut tidak dibuka semula? Bagaimana pula Kamalanathan gagal menjawab persoalan ibu bapa tentang bagaimana anak-anak mereka disuruh makan di kantin sementara di bilik mandi itu dua hari selepas Ramadan bermula?<\/p>\n
Kamalanathan berkata bahawa beliau hanya menyelesaikan masalah dengan memindahkan tempat makan keluar daripada bilik mandi tersebut. Menyelesaikan masalah adalah satu perkara, tetapi mengambil tindakan terhadap pihak yang bertanggungjawab juga adalah sama pentingnya bagi memastikan insiden sedemikian tidak berulang lagi. Umum perlu mengetahui bagaimana insiden sedemikian boleh berlaku kerana adalah sangat memalukan bagi kanak-kanak untuk terpaksa makan di bilik mandi yang dijadikan kantin sementara.<\/p>\n
Mesej yang jelas mesti disampaikan supaya penjawat awam dapat menghormati sensitiviti dan hak semua masyarakat. Kegagalan untuk berbuat demikian hanya akan menambahkan persepsi negatif bahawa sensitiviti dan hak orang bukan Islam boleh diinjak-injak tanpa sebarang hukuman. Persepsi negatif sedemikian dengan mudah boleh bertukar menjadi rasa dimangsakan oleh orang bukan Islam. Kegagalan Kerajaan Persekutuan BN untuk menghukum pemimpin Perkasa yang tidak pun meminta maaf atas seruannya yang rasis dan melampau untuk membakar kitab Bible dan mengeluarkan kenyataan anti-Hindu, sementara pasangan muda Alvivi didakwa di mahkamah kerana menghina Islam meskipun telah meminta maaf, jelas sekali tidak membantu untuk menolak dakwaan wujudnya sikap \u2018double standard\u2019.<\/p>\n
DAP amat sedih dengan gambar pihak polis dengan senjata berat berkawal di luar sekolah di Sungai Buloh itu, menghalang ibu bapa dan rakan-rakan mereka yang berang. Adakah sekolah-sekolah di Malaysia mesti turun ke tahap ini di mana anggota polis bersenjata diperlukan untuk berkawal di luar sekolah bukan untuk melindungi sekolah daripada penjenayah tetapi daripada ibu bapa yang marah menuntut jawapan dan keadilan?<\/p>\n
