Tan Sri Adenan Satem Should Set A Deadline To Pull Out Of BN If The BN Federal Government Refuses To Accede To Sarawak’s Demands For Autonomy As Guaranteed In The 1963 Malaysian Agreement Leading To The 1963 Federal Constitution.(e/c)

Speech By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng During The DAP Sarawak 18th State Annual Convention In Sibu On 30.10.2016 Read Out By DAP National Vice-Chairman Chong Chien Jen.

DAP is proud to be the authentic and genuine pro-Sarawak political party to consistently defend, preserve and promote the rights of Sarawakians against the onslaught of BN in encroaching on the constitutional status of Sarawak. This principled stand on behalf of Sarawakians is proudly amplified by DAP leader Lim Kit Siang, leading DAP MPs to vote against the 1976 amendments to Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution, which diluted, diminished and reduced the historic role of Sarawak in forming Malaysia.

The 1976 Federal Constitution amendments had downgraded the status of Sarawak from being an equal partner with Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia to being a mere one of the 14 states comprising the Malaysian Federation. To reverse the downgrade of Sarawak’s status, Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution must be amended back its original status to restore the rightful position of both Sabah and Sarawak that was agreed upon in 1963.

DAP had proposed this during the Sarawak state general elections without any response from either BN or Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem. What is the point of the Sarawak state goverment tabling a motion at the state legislative assembly next month to reclaim Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement of 1963 if BN in Putrajaya chooses to continue to ignore it? Sarawak is one of the founding members for Malaysia together with Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia, and its status is larger than any of the 9 individual states in Peninsular Malaysia.

Unfortunately, BN had orchestrated the amendment to the Federal Constitution in 1976, that was opposed by the DAP but supported by the BN Sarawak MPs, in downgrading Sarawak to the status of being only one among 14 states. Tan Sri Adenan should set a deadline to pull his MPs out of BN, if the BN Federal government refuses to accede to Sarawak’s demands for autonomy as guaranteed in the 1963 Malaysian Agreement leading to the 1963 Federal Constitution. BN must be taught a lesson and be reminded that just as without Sarawak there is no Malaysia, similarly without the support of Sarawak MPs, BN would lose Federal power.

Dr Sim Kui Hian Should Apologise And Withdraw His Insensitive Remark That The Increase In Cooking Oil Prices Should Be Viewed Positively As It Is Good For Health.

SUPP President and Sarawak Local Government Minister Dr Sim Kui Hian should apologise and withdraw his insensitive remark that the increase in cooking oil prices should be viewed positively as it is good for health. These remarks show how disconnected and out of touch a wealthy man like Dr Sim is with the economic hardships of ordinary Malaysians suffering from rising prices.

The removal of cooking oil subsidy has impacted negatively until we can see a shortage of cooking oil caused by desperate Malaysians buying out all cooking oil to save money from the price increase. And instead of offering support, Dr Sim is so heartless as to ignore the economic hardship and say that price rises are good because it is good for health.

Dr Sim also suggested that people should go for alternative styles of cooking like steaming, baking or grilling which reduced oil usage. This only confirms that BN does not care about the poor, suffering from price rises caused by GST or drop in the value of the ringgit and the RM52 billion 1MDB or the RM4.2 billion donation scandals.

In the coming general elections, DAP must focus on economic issues and ensuring autonomous powers for Sarawak as provided in Malaysia Agreement to uplift the economic status of Sarawak. DAP Sarawak members should be proud of our history in daring to stand up alone to defend the rights and status of Sarawak in 1976, at a time when even Sarawak BN component parties have abandoned Sarawak. If necessary, DAP is prepared to stand alone as we did in 1976, to defend the civil, political and economic rights of Sarawakians.
