By refusing to criticise the refusal of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to condemn Perkasa for distributing “White Pows” and not taking action against MCA Seputih Division Committee Member Dr Tiew Chew Ming, MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek can no longer hide MCA’s links and UMNO’s open support for Perkasa. What is the use of condemning the racist Perkasa when Chua should also have asked why the Prime Minister Dato Seri Najib did not condemn Perkasa for blatantly trampling over the sensitivities of the Chinese community by distributing white instead of red ang pau during Chinese New Year?

Clearly the Prime Minister’s refusal to condemn Perkasa only proves UMNO’s open support for Perkasa racist objectives in creating their own version of “Asian Apartheid” by wanting to divide Malaysians into favoured “first-class” and discriminated “second-class” citizens. MCA is equally guilty by failing to act sternly against its Sri Desa Branch Chairman and Seputeh division committee member Dr Tiew Chew Ming, who has been exposed as openly assisting Perkasa by ferrying elderly citizens to Perkasa’s event and spoke publicly in defense of Perkasa.

Such open linkages with Perkasa by UMNO and MCA contrast with the openness of PAS in respecting the religious and cultural sensitivities of the Chinese community. PAS leaders not only distributed ang pau, mandarin oranges and Chinese New Year cards to market traders but also to a pork seller, with his pork openly displayed. Will UMNO leader have a green lion dance performance or do what PAS leaders have done?

The time for racist parties like UMNO and MCA is over. Malaysians regardless of race must reject not only extremist Perkasa and Utusan Malaysia but also UMNO and MCA, that has divided the people for 55 years and robbed the country of trillions of ringgit by relying on racial rhetoric.

Star had a front-page report yesterday quoting Customs deputy director-general Datuk Zainul Abidin Taib as saying that 7 high-tech cash scanners capable of detecting bank notes in luggage are to be installed at all entry and exit points in the country to curb the illegal outflow of money that has amounted to bilions of ringgit. US-based watchdog group Global Financial Integrity in its annual report said Malaysia lost RM150bil in illegal outflow of cash in 2009.

Malaysia was the fourth highest among developing nations, losing US$338bil (RM1.08trillion or 1,077 billion) between 2000 and 2009. Are we to lose another trillion ringgit or go bankrupt first before realising that we are being distracted from fighting corruption by supporting extremists and racists?
LIM GUAN ENG

To paraphrase a famous quote from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, “The Prime Minister doth protest too much, methinks.”
It would appear that is the case today when Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak is trying to fool the public into believing that the use of “white pows” at Perkasa’s Chinese New Year gathering last Sunday has nothing to do with Barisan Nasional.

Najib also said that the incident was a learning experience for race relations in Malaysia. How can Najib dismiss this extremely disrespectful and insensitive gesture so frivolously, when white packets are traditionally used for Chinese funerals? The failure of the Prime Minister to condemn Perkasa for such a disparaging gesture shows how protective Dato’ Sri Najib is of Perkasa even at the expense of trampling over the sensitivities of the Chinese community.

Now, Najib is quickly trying to distance himself from the fiasco by claiming that Ibrahim Ali is an independent member of parliament and holds no official position, thus he has nothing to do with Barisan Nasional or the Government.

No one believes this. Only two years ago in an Al Jazeera interview, Najib himself had defended Perkasa by saying that they are “not so extreme” if one understood their demands, and that Perkasa can be accommodated by the Umno-led Government. And while he is an “independent MP” by name, Ibrahim Ali has always openly supported BN and Dato’ Sri Najib against Pakatan Rakyat.

On top of that, UMNO and BN has consistently supported Perkasa, attended their functions, and have even adopted their views on national policies. Even MCA has been exposed as openly assisting Perkasa when their Sri Desa Branch Chairman and Seputeh division committee member Dr Tiew Chew Ming was reported to have spoken on behalf of Perkasa as saying that Perkasa fights for all people regardless of race and had also arranged for people to attend this Perkasa function.

The late Datuk Dr Zainal Aznam, a member of the National Economic Advisory Council (NEAC) that drafted the New Economic Model (NEM), had even blamed the BN Government for submitting to Perkasa by dropping the proposed Equal Opportunities Commission, which was supposed to be part of the NEM. This happened following protests by Perkasa against the NEM.

Compounding this, time and time again Malaysians have seen Ibrahim Ali and Perkasa have been getting away with the most seditious actions and statements. Despite acts such as the burning of Bersih Chairperson Datuk Ambiga’s picture, calling her a “dangerous Hindu woman” and warning the Chinese not to come out on July 9 to join the Bersih 2.0 demonstration because “anything can happen”, no action whatsoever has been taken on Perkasa.

It is thus crystal clear that Perkasa has the support of the UMNO and BN leadership as well as UMNO’s paper Utusan Malaysia, when they can get away with such vile and seditious threats.

Only by openly cutting off all ties and support with Perkasa can Dato’ Sri Najib and UMNO convince Malaysians that Perkasa has nothing to do with BN. The PM must realise that it is his open support for Perkasa that emboldens them to act in an intolerant manner that preaches hate and extremism as well as expose his 1Malaysia as empty sloganeering.

Lim Guan Eng

Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim has made a dangerous statement with his false claim that at an official function he attended in the Penang, only Mandarin and English were spoken. Rais should not lie like Utusan Malaysia but prove which Penang state government official function he attended sidelined Bahasa Malaysia

I suspect that the official function that Rais is referring to is a function in Han Chiang College in Penang where he was the guest of honour representing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on 29 September 2011. I would like to remind Rais that Han Chiang College is a privately run college and the function was organised by Han Chiang and NOT by the state government.

Rais’ claims that he was the only one talking in the national language and a little bit of English, is untrue. I had also spoken in Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin. Why did Rais not mention that I also spoke in Bahasa Malaysia? If Rais was unhappy with the manner Han Chiang organised the event, why then did he not convey his unhappiness with Han Chiang? Why did he not demand an explanation from Han Chiang?

Instead Rais has chosen to unfairly blame the state government for a function that is organised by a private college. Making false allegations against the Penang state government is clearly intended to play the racist sentiment that Penang does not appreciate Bahasa Malaysia and not good for national unity. Rais had even urged the Malays in Penang to question this event.

If Rais can prove which Penang state government official function attended by him did not use Bahasa Malaysia, the Penang state government will act to correct this mistake. However if he fails to show proof, then he should withdraw his remarks and apologise. Otherwise he would be exposed as a man without honour and even a racist for trying to use this lie to work up the sentiments of the Malays.

The Penang state government wishes to express dismay at the systematic and serial attempts to undermine the Penang state government with lies and racist sentiments. Even though this is to be expected in the general elections season, raising the racial temperature is not only desperate but a highly irresponsible and reckless act that threatens the harmony and stability of our society.

Even if BN wants to win the general elections, this victory should be with honour based on truth and not lies.

I am surprised at the ferocity of BN’s latest attacks against the Penang state government and me personally. I will not reply to Rais personal attacks against me. Rais attack follows the ludicrous report in the New Straits Times(NST) and Utusan Malaysia on 2.10.2011 that I may have disclosed national secrets to Singaporeans at a dinner and even questioned my loyalty to my country.

I can not understand why my loyalty to Malaysia is questioned by the NST news report when I do not possess any Australian PR even though I graduated from Monash University. Shouldn’t BN leaders who had Australian PR have their loyalty questioned by the NST news report?

Datuk Seri Rais, the ball is in your court, what say you?
LIM GUAN ENG

—— BM Translation ———-

Let Us Ensure That Not A Single State Nor Citizen Is Left Behind!

48 years ago Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore took the bold step to form Malaysia. Singapore subsequently left 2 years later in 1965 but both Sabah and Sarawak remained. Unfortunately all the economic and social indicators show that Sabah and Sarawak continue to be left behind whilst Singapore has soared to surpass Malaysia in 2010 as the 3rd largest economy in ASEAN after Indonesia and Thailand.

Why did 7% continuous economic growth for more than 25 years leave behind not only oil-rich states like Sabah and Sarawak but also Terengganu? The “Growth Commission” Report (2008) by Economics Noble Laureate Michael Spence identified Malaysia as one of the 13 countries in the world that enjoyed sustained growth of 7% for more than 25 years based on 5 common characteristics:-
1.     fully exploited world economy;
2. maintained macroeconomic stability
3.     exhibited high savings and investment;
4. relied on markets to allocate resources; and
5. committed and credible governments

The answer why Sabah, Sarawak or Terengganu is left behind is corruption in Peninsular Malaysia, endemic and entrenched in Sabah and Sarawak. Too much have been lost. The shocking revelations by the US-based financial watchdog Global Financial integrity of RM 888 billion illicit capital flight from Malaysia between 2000-2008 cost is shocking. This means that every Malaysian man, woman and child have lost RM 33,000 each over 9 years!

South Korea’s GDP per capita was one third of Malaysia in the early 60s, but is now 3 times that of Malaysia despite having a bigger population of 48 million people. South Korea succeeded because they successfully fought not only corruption but reconnected with both the economic and ethical values of hard work, openness, integrity and innovativeness.

This is the desperate political battle for the economic soul of Malaysia that we can not lose. The time has come for Malaysians to choose carefully. Only a two-party system can ensure peace, harmony and that Malaysia’s rich natural resources benefit 27 million Malaysians. A two-party system requires a strong opposition which can not only deny BN its customary two-thirds majority but also able to change the government.

For those who say that PR does not know how to govern, the 4 PR states of Penang, Selangor, Kedah and Kelantan have proven our ability by beating the other 10 BN states by attracting RM25 billion in investments comprising 53% of Malaysia’s total investments of RM47.2 billion in 2010. For the first time in history, Penang is now the new champion of investments in Malaysia, coming out top in 2010 with RM 12.2 billion.

Let us reject a crony government in favour of a people’s government centered on 3Es of enabling the people with skills and education, empowering them with rights or opportunities and enriching the people by ensuring that the fruits of economic success can be shared.

Let us therefore teach our children hope and build their confidence that they can be as good as they want to be and not be forever deprived or condemned to be inferior merely on account of the colour of their skin.

Let us fight and protect each other based on freedom, justice and truth. Let us ensure that no single state or citizen is left behind. Then only can we lock our arms together and our heart beat as one for this beloved Malaysian nation that belongs to all whether black, brown, white or yellow.

Happy 48th Malaysia Day!

1.     全面利用世界经济;
3.     高存蓄率及投资率;

The Next 6 Months Will Determine Whether The Boldest Political Experiment Of Establishing A People-centric Government Will Prevail Or Perish From Penang?

The next 6 months will determine whether the boldest political experiment in the 2008 general elections of establishing a people-centric government will prevail or perish from Penang. Over the last 3 and a half years, there is a not only a cleaner, greener and safer Penang but also witnessed a change of mindset and renewed confidence.

Penangites are more confident and hence more optimistic about the future because they can rely on a people-centric government that listens to them, do the people’s work and gives hope for a better future. Similarly there is a recognition that we will be rewarded for hard work, being honest and continuously pursue excellence. There is no substitute for performance, productivity and proficiency.

However the greatest change in mindset is brought about by the emphasis of the Pakatan Rakyat people-centric government on upholding rule of law. That one does not need to go through middle-men or know third parties to get any transaction done in Penang. We need only to know the rules and the law.

By ensuring there is not only certainty but also clarity, we can enjoy prosperity together. The PR state government has worked hard to regain the people’s trust and confidence in the state government. To overcome public distrust of the state government as an institution that does not help but harm the people, PR has terminated the politics of patronage, cronyism and corruption.

Let us inspire hope by stressing on performance not privilege, expertise not entitlement and integrity not corruption. Let us be bonded by our common aspirations for justice, freedom, truth, democracy and social welfare for the weak and poor.

Only an economy free from corruption can we ensure that the people prosper and benefit. Let us embrace a future free from fear and cronyism. Let us embrace the future by embracing every Malay, Indian, Chinese, Kadazan and Iban, as Malaysian brothers and sisters, Malaysian sons and daughters.

To mark Malaysia Day in Penang, the Penang Hill Corporation is offering free train rides up Penang Hill on 16 September 2011 for all Malaysians from Sabah or Sarawak for one day.

—- BM Translation —

DAP insists that all top SPM scorers should get an overseas Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships and not 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) grants to study in local public and private universities in the interests of fairplay, reward performance based on excellence not mediocrity and demonstrate the country’s commitment to retain our human talent.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz announced yesterday that 500 special education grants would be disbursed by 1MDB to the rejected applicants. The scholarships to public universities would be worth RM7,500 a year and scholarships for study of critical courses in private universities would be worth RM15,000 a year while grants for non-critical courses would be worth RM7,500.

At the same time, DAP condemns the BN government for failing to uphold transparency and accountability by making public the detailed results of all those who were awarded overseas scholarships. MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek has still not explained why MCA Ministers failed to fulfil Chua’s promise to award all top SPM scorers with PSD overseas scholarships. Chua would do well to read the article by his predecessor Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat in Malaysiakini that BN’s failure to award overseas PSD scholarships equally to all SPM top scorers has reflected negatively on BN.

Instead of responding to MCA’s failure that even his predecessor Ong had criticised, MCA is trying to distract attention by attacking the Penang PR state government for lying that Penang does not have enough money to provide scholarships to top students. MCA claims that Penang has vast wealth to spend on overseas scholarships because Penang came out top in investments with RM 12.2 billion in 2010.

If MCA can not differentiate between foreign and domestic investments with revenue then MCA does not deserve to be part of government. Investments are held by the private sector to spend to generate jobs and economic growth, not revenue for the state government to spend. Perhaps all MCA leaders should undergo a basic course of finance. Further the Penang PR state government is still trying to clean up years of BN’s misrule and abuse of power in the state that caused RM230 million in losses to Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Perai(MPSP) until MPSP became practically bankrupt and the Tang Hak Ju land scam that costs the state RM40 million.

Despite these revenue constraints, Penang PR has continued to award loans at local public universities to all deserving Penang students equally. Penang PR has also increased the primary and secondary school grants(not loans) to poor students. DAP pledges that unlike Barisan Nasional (BN), all deserving top students in the country will be awarded the same scholarships if Pakatan Rakyat (PR) wrins control of the federal government.

This pledge to award overseas scholarships equally to all top students is necessary to win Malaysia’s future by escaping the middle-income trap to become a high-income economy with USD15,000 per capita income. Malaysia would be sending a wrong message if we reward mediocrity instead of excellence, do not have a level-playing field that is fair to the best and brightest and allow the brain drain to continue. The time has come to invest our resources in the future by spending tens of billions of ringgit on human talent instead of squandering it on corruption and white elephant projects likes the RM 5 billion 100-storey Menara Warisan.

Press Statement By Penang Chief Minister And DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng In Penang On 7 June 2011.

—– BM Translation—-

The Public Is Not Interested Who Is Trying to Play The Hero But The Real Hero Is The One Who Can Ensure That All Top Students Can Receive PSD Scholarships.

UMNO and MCA’s public spat over who is right in the granting of the PSD scholarships does not resolve the fundamental question of gross injustice felt by many top students who did not receive the scholarships. The public is not interested who is trying to play the hero but the real hero is the one who can ensure that all top students can receive PSD scholarship.

The public is terribly confused with the differing accounts given by both UMNO and MCA even though both have Ministers in the same Cabinet. This lack of direction and mass confusion would have been comical if not for the fact that innocent top students have become unfortunate victims of this struggle between UMNO and MCA.

If MCA is correct, why is it that no action has been taken against those errant government officials who fail to award scholarships to top students and immediately correct the error by awarding them the scholarships? However if UMNO is correct, then MCA should then apologise to the top students and press UMNO to change the policy to grant PSD scholarships to all top students regardless of race or religion .

This annual problem of top students not getting PSD scholarships but given to those with poorer results makes a complete mockery of BN’s claims that the education system is based on merit and performance. Further the failure to reward top students will only accelerate the brain drain and severely undermines effort to attract and retain human talent.

Malaysian students who have worked diligently in order to achieve their dreams now face the prospect of having their dreams crushed by a bureaucracy that is inept and unappreciative. What about the parents who have to explain to their children that despite doing their best and being the best, they have been denied their due opportunities because of a silly bureaucratic mistake that they now have to appeal for?

How can the Federal Government make those students appeal for something that they well and truly deserved? To do so is akin to punishing them for a fault that is not theirs! DAP hopes that BN would stop this political football between UMNO and MCA but ensure that all top students not be made sacrificial victims as the Malay saying goes, “Gajah dengan gajah bertembung, pelanduk mati di tengah-tengah.”

Press Statement By Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng In Komtar, George Town On 25 May 2011.

——BM Translation ———

Once again, the Malaysian public is serenaded with fancy promises by the Federal Government, only to be brought down again by incompetency in policy implementation. The Federal Government’s promise of a meritocratic award of JPA scholarships to every single student that achieves 8A+s and above is now overshadowed by the bungling ineptitude of the delivery system.

Deputy Education Minister Wee Ka Siong blamed Public Service Department(PSD) officials for failing to follow Cabinet criteria in selecting scholarship recipients. As a result, many qualified applicants failed to obtain grants while those who students who performed worse were given scholarships instead.

Wee also added that there were a number of instances where straight A+ students had been denied scholarships and instead were only offered placements in matriculation programmes with loans. Meanwhile, students who obtained 4+s were awarded scholarships to the United States.

This gross blunder is totally unacceptable and should be rejected by all Malaysians. What’s worse, the solution offered by Deputy Minister Wee Ka Siong has only compounded the problem and highlighted the severe lack of empathy within the walls of Putrajaya. He has suggested that students should accept whatever they are given first, and then submit an appeal to the JPA for review.

Why should the people who have not done any wrong be the ones who have to appeal? This is not only ridiculous but a gross injustice that top students who have done no wrong, must appeal to fumbling and incompetent PSD officials to be awarded scholarships. Should not responsibility be placed upon the JPA to correct their errors? This is a case of punishing the victim instead of the perpetrator. If the Federal Government thinks they can sweep this issue under the carpet, they are wrong.

This is exactly the kind of issue that has contributed to the growing national brain drain problem. How are young Malaysians supposed to believe that they live in a fair and just society when such straightforward matters cannot be conducted in a transparent and proper manner? It appears that instead of attempting to win the hearts and minds of talented young Malaysians, the Federal Government is intent on victimising and ostracising them. Blame should be squarely placed upon the shoulders of the Federal Government if this scandal leads to even more bleeding of talent.

We demand that a full investigation is carried out, and that those students with deserving results be immediately given scholarships without the need for them to demean themselves by appealing when it is not their mistake in the first place. Further JPA officials responsible should be punished as an example to other incompetent officials of zero tolerance for those who fail to practice competency, accountability and transparency.

Clearly the Federal government should go back to basics in employing competent government officials. 3 aspects are important for professional service. One, a good or effective system in place. Two a positive work ethic and attitude. Thirdly, inculcating a team spirit. How can the Economic Transformation Programme(ETP) efforts to attract and retain human talent work when the Federal government officials can not even get it right the simple job of offering scholarships to the best students and instead awarding it to the worst?

2011 DAP Wesak Day Message By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Kuala Lumpur On 17.5.2011

This year’s Wesak Day’s theme as announced by the Malaysian Buddhist Association of, “Cultivate Loving Kindness, Foster Harmony” reminds us that love and blessings is not just for Buddhists but for all mankind including Muslims, Christians and Hindus.

Only if we cleanse hatred from our hearts and fill our soul with love can we find peace, balance and harmony with our lives and with each other. For this reason DAP calls on all Malaysians to stand up for peace and harmony by uniting against extremists and harmony that wants to see Malaysia burn with hatred and violence.

Malaysians are shocked and outraged at the inaction by the Home Ministry against UMNO-owned paper Utusan Malaysia, for publishing dangerous lies of a Christian conspiracy with DAP to set up a Christian state, that is clearly intended to incite hatred against Christians. The BN government has also refused to act against Perkasa’s Ibrahim Ali for making Christians an object of hate by calling for a crusade(perang jihad) against Christians. Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamudin Tun Hussein Onn even refused to call Ibrahim Ali an extremist for launching this crusade against Christians.

Whatever our political beliefs, the time has come to unite against such dangerous extremism and racism. DAP is willing to work with all Malaysians including non-UMNO component members in BN to oppose this crusade and demand action against Utusan Malaysia and Ibrahim Ali’s reckless opportunism and irresponsible adventurism.

Are non-Malays and non-Muslims an easy target to be blamed and kicked around based on lies just to distract attention from the real problems affecting 27 million Malaysians? Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin signalled the inevitability of price hikes when he announced yesterday that the country could no longer maintain the current subsidies which has doubled this year from RM10.32 billion to RM20.58 billion, with RM18 billion for petroleum-related sectors.

Instead of addressing the failure to remove gas subsidies benefiting Independent Power Producers(IPPs) that cost RM 19 billion annually, Perkasa is allowed to distract attention by talking of a crusade against Christians. The price hikes and difficult economic livelihood of the people are real issues that must be addressed.

Whether in Cabinet or outside Cabinet, the time has come for all Malaysians whether Muslims or non-Muslims to stand together to reject hatred unequivocally, abhor extremists and universally condemn violence. We must all pray and speak up for peace and harmony, prosperity and justice, public accountability and good governance.

UMNO’s Refusal To Act Against Perkasa and Ibrahim Ali’s Incendiary Crusade Against Christians Because Perkasa Does Not Represent All Malays Confirms UMNO’s Protection And Support For Perkasa To Incite Hatred Against Christians And Create Enmity Amongst Peace-Loving Malaysians.

UMNO’s refusal to act against Perkasa and Ibrahim Ali’s incendiary crusade against Christians by reason that Perkasa does not represent all Malays confirms UMNO’s protection and support for Perkasa to incite hatred against Christians and create enmity amongst peace-loving Malaysians. This is a weak excuse by UMNO because if action is only taken based on the strength of your representation not the nature and ill-intent of your violence, why then act against terrorists because they also do not represent all the Malays?

This latest justification by Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Sri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein Onn why no action is taken against Ibrahim Ali only confirms that Perkasa is UMNO’s alter-ego. When Ibrahim Ali launched his crusade against Christians in Gombak organised by the Komuniti 1Malaysia group of Kampung Kerdas and Kampung Changkat in Gombak, Umno Gombak chief Abdul Rahman Kamaruddin, his deputy, Abdul Aziz Jantan, and division information chief Ismail Ahman was also there to lend their support.

Ibrahim Ali had justified his crusade on the false accusations by Utusan Malaysia that the Christians “challenged the sovereignty and dignity of Malays and Muslims.” by wanting to form a Christian state and appointing a Christian Prime Minister. The failure of the Home Ministry to act sternly against Utusan for printing this dangerous lie has only emboldened extremists like Ibrahim Ali who now wants to launch a holy war or crusade against Christians.

This dangerous lie by Utusan Malaysia has given a golden opportunity to extremists like Ibrahim Ali to make Christians the object of hate and incite enmity amongst Malaysians. Hishamuddin even went one step further in defending Perkasa and Ibrahim Ali by refusing to brand Ibrahim Ali an extremist for calling for a crusade against Christians! Just imagine if any Christian had called for a crusade against Muslims, he or she would have been arrested immediately.

Ibrahim Ali had also declared his loyalty to UMNO and his meetings with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. How much more evidence do we need to show that UMNO and Perkasa is one and the same to entrench Malay support for UMNO to win the next general elections?

There is no point for other BN component parties such as Gerakan or MCA to make press statements only in the non-Malay media asking for action against Ibrahim Ali when they know that none will be taken. So far no Gerakan or MCA Ministers have dared to press for a Cabinet decision insisting that Cabinet acts firmly against racists and extremists seeking to burn one Malaysia with this dangerous lies.

DAP calls on all peace-loving Malaysian regardless of race and religion to unite against such extremists who dare to use the language of violence because of inaction or even tacit support by the BN government. All of us should pray regardless of our faith that truth will prevail and peace maintained in our beloved country.

UMNO Inspired Demonstration In Butterworth Shows The Dangerous Political Games Of UMNO Not Just Opposing A Toll-Free Alternative Road But Playing With Fire Through Blatant Lies That DAP Wants To Create A Christian State And A Christian Prime Minister To Win Malay Support At Any Cost.

The UMNO inspired demonstration in my constituency of Bagan(Butterworth) yesterday shows that dangerous political games of UMNO in not just opposing a toll-free alternative road that cost less than RM 2.5 million. What is more risky to the country’s racial and religious harmony is that these UMNO-inspired demonstrators used the blatant lies that DAP wants to create a Christian state and Prime Minister to condemn me.

It is utterly irresponsible of UMNO to play with fire by spreading such lies through their newspaper Utusan Malaysia just to win Malay support at any cost. Many Christian leaders have expressed utter dismay at these provocative lies and denied vehemently that there are groups of Christian pastors working with DAP to create a Christian state and Prime Minister.

By failing to stop the UMNO-owned Utusan Malaysia from continuing this hate campaign of lies, the BN government is inciting hate against the minority Christian community. DAP express grave concern that this hate campaign against Christians by Utusan Malaysia may not just stop at verbal attacks. The BN government has to bear full responsibility for any undesirable consequences on the Christian community in Malaysia based on Utusan hate campaign of lies.

DAP has reiterated our stand in endorsing the Federal Constitution that Islam is the religion of Malaysia. DAP is opposed to the establishment of any theocratic state from any religion. This position of supporting Islam as stated in our Federal Constitution is even included in the DAP party constitution.

DAP regrets that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has called for calm by promising to investigate the allegations without stating that action would taken against Utusan Malaysia if found to be printing false news. Clearly, the BN government has not only failed to stop Utusan Malaysia from continuing with such baseless attacks but has even encouraged them by promising action against Christian pastors and the DAP if found to be true. Why has the BN government not promised to take stern action against Utusan Malaysia when Utusan’s lies are exposed?

Such double-standards by BN leaders lend suspicion that Utusan enjoys full immunity as an UMNO-owned paper to spread dangerous lies and is allowed to conduct its campaign of hate against minority peaceful Christians, who are helpless to defend themsleves.

In the demonstration against me yesterday, UMNO has every right to oppose a toll-free alternative road from Jalan Bagan 29-Jalan Siram that cost much less than the estimated cost of RM 5 million. Through the Penang PR government’s famed open tender system, the cost was brought down to RM 3.3 million. The contractor who won the project was a Malay contractor who brought down the cost further by another RM800,000 to RM2.5 million through close monitoring by the Penang State EXCO member YB Lim Hock Seng.

This is a classic case of a state government project costing less than than the awarded tender price that would never happen in a BN state, which would invariably cost more than the tendered price. Further the contractor doing the project is a Malay, proving that not only can a Malay contractor compete under the open tender system but that the Penang PR government gave a majority of government contracts to Malays.

It is regrettable that UMNO opposes a free alternative road but has never organised a demonstration against a tolled road. This is the essential difference between BN and PR. BN wants to build toll roads to collect money from the public without providing any free alternative roads. PR wants to provide an alternative toll-free road.

BN and UMNO has every right to protest and oppose the PR state government building this toll-free alternative road in Jalan Bagan(Butterworth). This is essentially a difference of principle and nation-building policy between BN and PR.

However, no one has a right to run a campaign based on lies and UMNO has no right to protest against something that is just not true. Or else where would this end? If our country is built on lies, then collapse is certain.

Malaysians regardless of race and religion must stand up together against UMNO and Utusan Malaysia who are playing with fire and are ready to burn 1Malaysia with the racist agenda of 1 Melayu/1 bumi, 1 Cina of MCA or 1 India of MIC.

Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Kuala Lumpur On 9.5.2011.

Will MCA President Dato Seri Chua Soi Lek dare to ask UMNO to direct its paper Utusan Malaysia to withdraw and apologise to all Malaysians for practicing a form of apartheid by inciting racial segregation and hatred in calling for 1Melayu, 1 Bumi movement? Just Do It, Chua Soi Lek. Tell UMNO to direct Utusan Malaysia to withdraw and apologise for the 1Melayu, 1Bumi movement or MCA would withdraw from BN.

UMNO’s paper call for 1Melayu, 1Bumi movement is a grievous insult to all Malaysians because it serves to be exclusive and dominate other races to the extent of reducing these Malaysian citizens, including non-Malay bumis from East Malaysia, as 2nd or 3rd-class citizens.

DAP and PR parties have never fought any elections on the basis of Malay unity, Chinese unity, Iban unity or Kadazan unity. Instead it is BN parties that tries to divide and rule by stressing on Malay unity, Chinese unity or Indian unity and merely paying lip service to bangsa Malaysia. At every election DAP and PR parties have stressed on Malaysian unity.

As a result of SUPP losing 12 seats to DAP in the recent Sarawak general elections, Utusan Malaysia is launching the 1Melayu,1 bumi movement as a lesson to teach those who voted for the opposition, particularly the Chinese community. Like BN, Utusan Malaysia is trying to racialise the election results even though DAP won because of support from all communities in Sarawak. Facts and figures do not lie and have shown that the swing to the opposition amongst the non-Chinese voters is higher than the Chinese swing to the opposition.

However in order to hide the real reasons of their loss, namely corruption and demands for Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to step down, UMNO and Utusan Malaysia is pitting the results as a conflict between the Chinese community and the government.

Any failure by Chua to do so would show that he is a man who dares to admit his fault, dare to speak and dare to walk the talk is just an empty sandiwara devoid of substance. Just like Chua Soi Lek’s call for SUPP to reject any cabinet posts in Sarawak because of losses in the Sarawak elections, is fundamentally flawed because of three reasons.

Firstly, massive voter disgruntlement in Sarawak is across the board and not directed towards the SUPP in particular, but instead towards the thirty-year rule of their Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, and the BN State Government in general.

Secondly, I am surprised that for someone with his experience, Chua Soi Lek appears to have missed the very obvious sentiment on the ground. Throughout the entire state, Sarawakians of every community are clamouring for ‘change’, and this has nothing to do with race.

If the MCA is so concerned about racial issues and truly believes in the principle of the exercise, then we wonder why they are not practising what they preach by insisting that their sole assemblymen in Perak and Negri Sembilan relinquish their Exco posts because the voters have clearly abandoned their party. This can also be said for MCA’s four Cabinet Ministers.

In his latest remark, Chua Soi Lek claims that it was not his idea but former president Ong Tee Keat’s to maintain the Cabinet positions. As Ong Tee Keat had correctly pointed out, it was Ong Ka Ting and not Ong Tee Keat who was president at the time. Ong also reminded Chua as MCA President, he can still direct MCA Ministers to withdraw from Cabinet and the sole MCA State EXCO in Perak and Negeri Sembilan respectively to resign. Clearly Chua Soi Lek is intent on playing internal MCA factional politics.

To date Chua has not dared to answer Ong Tee Keat. Why the silence? As someone who has always prided himself as a person who ‘dares to speak up’ or ‘dares to admit the truth’, he should now prove to all Malaysians that he also dares to walk the talk. Or else stop all these nonsense talk when he does not say what he means nor mean what he say.

Malaysians hope that the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will heed the voice of the rakyat and Malaysian netizens to cancel the provision of free 1Malaysia email accounts and give free wifi instead. Even though this is now not a government initiative but a private sector initiative, spending RM50 million on duplicating efforts of Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail etc to provide free email accounts is typical profile of a BN government being penny wise pound foolish.

Giving free email accounts is not the most important service in the world. Somehow the government is missing the wood from the trees. Just like the RM52 billion bumi shares scandal, where RM52 billion worth of shares supposed to be given to ordinary Malays/bumiputera natives went missing. Instead of setting up a Royal Commission of Inquiry(RCI) to serve public interest by investigating and taking action against the culprits responsible for running of RM52 billion worth of shares, the BN government appears more interested in setting up a RCI over some dubious sex video tapes by individuals seeking political vengeance.

Why focus on providing something that is already free? This is just like selling ice to the Eskimos. Focus on providing free wifi or improving broadband speed, quality and reliability. The government should stop the monopoly given to certain companies and should instead open up the industry to competitive bidding so that users can enjoy better connectivity on par with our neighbouring countries.

The Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) should also avoid charges by some net citizens of being deceitful following the quick amendments of details relating to the 1Malaysia email project. There is a big difference on Tuesday in its website and yesterday, as it is now called a private sector initiative when it was previously listed as a government initiative.

Since yesterday, the description of the RM50 million project read: “The 1Malaysia Email project which features the domain name of ‘myemail.my’ is a private sector initiative led by Tricubes Berhad to provide a unique and official email account and user ID for interested citizens of Malaysia.” Pemandu should come clean and explain this glaring discrepancy which raises questions about its clarity, certainty and reliability of information released to the public.

Najib had announced the project on Wednesday, saying all Malaysians aged 18 and over would be given a free account to allow for direct and secure communications between citizens and the government. There are concerns both about privacy and security of those using these email accounts, who fears not only that their communications may be monitored and intercepted but also whether any messages or transactions made are reliable and trust-worthy. That is probably the reason why there are now close to 40,000 Facebook users joining in a virtual protest against the project run by Tricubes Bhd, which is currently in danger of being delisted from Bursa Malaysia for financial irregularities

Worse is the latest report in Malaysiakini that even though the email account is free, some of the services are not free but fees will be imposed. Instead of clarifying this issue, the BN government should quickly cut its losses and disassociate itself with this private initiative from a company under a “financial cloud”. DAP reiterates our appeal to the state government to focus on providing free wifi and improving broadband speed at affordable rates at international standards.

                                                                                      LIM GUAN ENG

Press Statement By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Kuala Lumpur & Kuching On 18.4.2011

MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek should not follow Utusan Malaysia’s tactics of racialising the results of the recent Sarawak state general elections when the key issue is about change not about whether voters want Chinese representation in government. UMNO paper, Utusan Malaysia, had asked BN to ignore Chinese voters just because they supported the opposition.

I wish to reiterate that DAP’s theme and focus in this Sarawak state general elections is not SUPP but on Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Taib Mahmud; not about whether the Chinese want representation in government but whether all voters want change;. DAP won 12 out of 15 seats in Sarawak because voters want change and prefer a two-party system over one-party rule, people’s power over one-man rule, and good governance over Taib’s misrule.

BN has suffered not only a loss of 16 seats but more importantly an 8% reduction in popular votes by BN from 63% in 2006 state general elections to 55% now. What type of democratic elections allow a party that wins 55% of the popular vote and yet garner more than 77% of the total seats? Clearly this is a mockery of democracy, in complete defiance of the principle of one-man, one-vote.

Sarawak voters have sent a loud and clear message to SUPP that they clearly wanted Taib to go and go now. SUPP was rejected by voters because SUPP failed to represent the people and was seen as Taib’s representative. Therefore the most important issue that SUPP must address if SUPP is sincere in accepting the decision of the voters, is to withdraw support for Taib as Sarawak Chief Minister

SUPP’s failure to listen to the people’s verdict, by not demanding Taib’s immediate resignation, will only dishearten its supporters but hearten Taib. Any attempts to threaten to leave the state government or punish urban and Chinese voters for supporting the opposition, is a desperate effort by MCA to distract and cover up media attention from the real issue of whether SUPP dare to ask Taib to go.

Chua Soi Lek Should Prove That He Does Not Practice Double-standards By Asking Mah Hang Soon To Resign As Perak State EXCO Immediately.

For this reason MCA President Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek’s call that SUPP should not accept any position in the Sarawak state Cabinet, as the party had lost the Chinese community’s support, is to help SUPP hide from addressing the Taib Mahmud issue. If Chua is consistent then he should have given similar advice to Gerakan President Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

Is Chua not practicing double-standards when Chua did not ask Tsu Koon, after Tsu Koon lost the 2008 general elections badly, not to go through the back-door of being appointed a Senator and a Cabinet Minister? Why then did Chua not object to MCA joining Cabinet and accepting Ministerial posts after MCA had lost badly in the 2008 general elections?

If Chua is genuine, then he should instruct Perak MCA State EXCO Dato Dr Mah Hang Soon to resign immediately as MCA won only one state seat in the last 2008 general elections. Chua’s failure to ask Mah to resign shows his typical double-standard of saying one thing but doing another.

Clearly Chua is not only deceiving himself but also deceiving others when he says that this Sarawak state elections is about whether the Chinese wants representation in Government. The voters want change, especially for Taib Mahmud to retire immediately.

What is of interest to the people of Sarawak, is whether SUPP has learnt its lesson from the voters by stopping from becoming Taib’s representative and turn to demanding Taib’s immediate resignation. For how long still must SUPP continue to defend Taib? Will SUPP realise that they need to change from blindly supporting Taib only after they have lost every single seat?

If BN Takes Punitive Action Against Urban Voters, The Chinese Community & Anyone For Exercising Their Democratic Rights To Vote For The Opposition, Then What Is The Point Of Holding Elections?

Utusan Malaysia’s open call Barisan Nasional (BN) to ignore the Chinese community for not supporting the ruling coalition during the April 16th Sarawak state elections is not only racist but also against the very tenets of democracy. If BN takes punitive action against urban voters, the Chinese community and anyone for exercising their democratic rights to vote for the opposition, then what is the point of holding elections?

For a paper that wants to celebrate the murder of innocent non-Malays during the bloody May 13 riots in 1969 as a holy and auspicious day, to continue such racist and extremist attacks is not surprising. What is surprising is that for an UMNO paper like Utusan, UMNO continues to allow and sanction its racist approach against non-Malays and non-Muslims both in Peninsular and East Malaysia. Is such racism and extremism by an UMNO paper consistent with 1Malaysia?

In any elections, the people have a right and freedom to choose who they want to vote for. To punish them for making that choice freely is dictatorial and feudal. DAP had won 12 seats in Sarawak despite facing BN’s misuse of government machinery, money politics, fear and intimidation as well as media control until internet sites like Malaysiakini were hacked and shut down.

Despite such dishonest tactics, there was an 8% swing in popular vote against BN, with BN dropping from 63% in the 2006 state elections to 55%. This 8% swing in popular vote against BN is a small political earthquake in Sarawak.

Unfortunately as a result of unfair delineation of constituencies, the one-man, one-vote principle is not respected. Despite winning 55% of the popular vote, BN has won more than 77% of the seats contested. It is this violation of the one-man, one-vote principle that is undemocratic and should be addressed by Chua Soi Lek.

                                                                                                    LIM GUAN ENG
