IKEA’s First Store Outside KL Is One Critical Catalyst To Complete The Makeover Of Batu Kawan As A Green One-stop Center(e/c)

Press Statement By Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng In Komtar, George Town On 11.1.2014.

IKEA’s First Store Outside Kuala Lumpur Is One Critical Catalyst To Complete The Makeover Of Batu Kawan As A Green One-stop Center For Advanced Manufacturing, Services and Logistics Hub; An Education Center Of Excellence, A Premier Residential Location As Well As A Commercial And Retail Center.

IKEA’s first store outside Kuala Lumpur is one critical catalyst to complete the makeover of Batu Kawan as a green one-stop center for advanced manufacturing, services and logistics hub; an education center of excellence, a premier residential location as well as a commercial and retail center. IKEA has a strong reputation of advocating environmentally-friendly practices.

The sale of 245 acres of land by Penang Development Corporation(PDC) for RM 284 million to Aspen Vision Land Sdn Bhd and Ikano Pte Ltd, that is fully paid in 5 years, where
• 30 acres for the development of Ikano’s flagship IKEA Store and phase 1 of the Shopping Mall
• 45 acres for the development of phase 2 of the Shopping Mall; and
• 170 acres for mixed development purposes (Remaining Parcels)

RM 5 million non-refundable deposit has been banked in to PDC. The Penang state government welcomes this investment by Ikano not only as an economic growth engine but also to put Batu Kawan on the international map as a world-class site for industry, commercial centers, premium designer outlets, specialist hospital and international schools.

Hopefully, IKEA’s entry into Penang is only the beginning and would help to rapidly conclude other bigger catalyst projects that provide not just higher-income employment but also business opportunities. The state government has received public queries whether living in the neighbourhood of IKEA and other educational institutions such as the local KDU University College and University of Hull, will increase the price of public and affordable housing built by PDC.

The state government wishes to assure the public that the price of the 11,800 units of public housing (less than RM 72,000 per unit) and affordable housing (between RM 72,000 – RM 250,000 per unit), will be maintained. The state government has instructed PDC to implement a comprehensive transport master plan that will seamlessly connect all sectors in the 5,000 acres that is in Batu Kawan, once the full development plans are finalised.

With IKEA’s presence, the state government has another world-class brand name that Penang can be proud of and make Batu Kawan a more attractive place to live, learn, work and play.
